Mullins names campaign chief
Republican Mayoral candidate Steven R. Mullins has appointed John Johnston as his campaign chief of staff. “With an impressive background in political campaigns and a deep understanding of the political landscape in New York City, Johnston brings a wealth of experience and expertise.” Mullins said,
Johnston, a registered Democrat, has been actively involved in numerous high-profile campaigns throughout New York, including serving as a key member of the teams for Bloomberg for Mayor and Garcia for Mayor. In addition, he has lent his skills and knowledge to various congressional, city council, assembly and state senate races, making him a seasoned professional in the field of political campaigning.
Johnston’s educational background further strengthens his qualifications for his new role. He holds a master’s degree in political science from Brooklyn College. Additionally, his studies in urban planning at Hunter College provide him with valuable insights into the unique challenges and opportunities facing West Haven.
“I am confident that John’s extensive campaign experience, combined with his academic background will be instrumental in shaping and implementing effective strategies for the upcoming election.” Mullins said.
Mullins says his campaign is committed to building a better future for West Haven, with a focus on community engagement. “Our goal is to create a city that works for all residents, regardless of where they live and their political party affiliations and leanings”. Said Mullins.

Brush will now be picked up in the first and third weeks of each month.
Treating basins
The Health Department, together with the Department of Public Works, has begun treating catch basins and other potential mosquito breeding sites throughout the city.
Farmers Market open for the season
The Tony Inzero Farmers Market has opened its 2023 season next to the Oak Street Beach parking lot off Captain Thomas Boulevard.
The market, nestled on the right side of the beach lot, includes state farmers selling homegrown fruits and vegetables and crafters selling wares from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays through Oct. 14.
It features artisan breads by Hoffman Unlimited LLC, sauces and jams by Chile King LLC, and salts, oils and vinegars by Dash N’ Drizzle.
The farmers market is partnering with ArtsWest CT this season to showcase a variety of entertainment, such as live performances and unique demonstrations, at the Saturday markets.
The market also includes more than 20 different vendors, crafters, organizations and food trucks during the season.
The Thursday markets feature What the Truck?! BBQ, in addition to ice cream at both markets.
Parking is available in the Oak Street municipal lot and on Palace Street. Oak Street is on the senior shuttle route and the CTtransit route. In addition, a van will run from the West Haven Senior Center, 201 Noble St., to Oak Street at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays.
The Department of Elderly Services will start distributing reusable farmers market cards to eligible city residents. Residents 60 and older who meet income requirements are eligible for $24 vouchers in the form of electronic cards. 2 bus trips open
The West Haven Senior Center is offering two bus trips. The first is to the Aqua Turf Club in Southington on Sept. 12 for an afternoon of ’60s and ’70s classics performed by Rainere Martin as Donna Summer and The Brass Attack Band.
The second to Mystic Seaport is on Sept. 27.
The trip includes the seaport’s flagship attractions, such as the largest maritime museum in the U.S., ship tours and a half-hour cruise on the Mystic River aboard the Sabino, the nation’s oldest wooden, coal-burning steamboat.
The cost is $130 and includes transportation, gratuities, admission to the seaport, the Sabino cruise and lunch at Scotch Plains Tavern in Essex. Lunch selection is made at the time of reservation.
Payment is due Aug. 18.
The bus departs at 9 a.m. from the Veterans Memorial Park parking lot at 91 Bull Hill Lane, the former Nike site, and leaves around 3:30 p.m. from Essex.

Food distribution, Aug. 19
A Community Food Give-away is planned for Saturday, Aug. 19, at the Tony Inzero Farmers Market, sponsored by a concerned resident. The non-perishable food distribution will begin at 10 a.m., and be given on a first-come, first-served, basis. Those who need information should contact [email protected]
Juneteenth rescheduled
The city’s third annual celebration of Juneteenth will take place on Saturday, July 22 at Brent Watt Park, 24 Tile Street in Allingtown. Admission is free for all ages. The celebration was postponed due to bad weather on June 19. The festivities will take place between 11-3with entertainment, food and vendor booths.
Entertainment will include a variety of performances from a cross section of genres. Free parking is available at the University of New Haven Isadore Street entrance.
Bowling league offered
West Haven’s Youth and Family Services and Department of Parks and Recreation are teaming up to provide an alternative enrichment bowling league for residents ages 13-17.
The 10-pin league is for West Haven residents and will take place at the Bowlero Milford bowling alley, 1717 Boston Post Road, from 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays, July 11-Aug. 1.
The four-week program costs $25 per child. The fee includes two weekly games of bowling, a shoe rental, a pizza slice and soda, as well as a $7 arcade card each week.
Bus transportation is provided for those enrolled in the program. Participants must ride the bus — no drop-offs at Bowlero.
Bus pickup sites and times are: Carrigan Intermediate School, 2 Tetlow St., 3:15 p.m., and Bailey Middle School, 106 Morgan Lane, 3:30 p.m.
The bus will depart at the designated time and will not wait for those who are late.

Pizza Party for candidate
Ansonia Republican Mayor David Cassetti, Derby Republican Mayor Richard Dziekan and Greenwich Republican First Selectman Fred Camillo are hosting a Community Pizza Party for West Haven Republican Mayoral Candidate Steven R. Mullins.

He has proven his dedication and has shown leadership for many years.” Said Cassetti. “David, Fred and I are honored to come to West Haven to help out Steve. The all you can eat pizza party will be held this Sunday, July 23rd from 1-3:00 at Mike’s Apizza, 111 Campbell Ave. It is $10 per person.

Christmas in July at Poli House
The West Haven Historical Society will host its annual Christmas in July fundraiser on Saturday, July 22, 10 a.m.-3 p.m, at the Poli Mansion, 686 Savin Ave., corner of Main. Free Admission.
A variety of vendors: wreaths, jewelry, notecards, polymer clay items, craft items, tree raffle and more will be on sale.
Car Show set
The Sons & daughters of Italy Lodge 2805 will be hosting its Second Annual Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 12, on the grounds of St. Therese Church, 555 Middletown Ave.,, North Haven. Registration is 7:30- 8:30 a.m., Show runs from 9-2.
There will be food, music, raffles, and trophies. Pre-registration is $15.00. registration on the day of the show is $20. Bring your chairs and enjoy the day.
