West Haven’s boys soccer team qualified for the state tournament with a 4-0 victory over Lyman Hall on Senior Night. With the win, West Haven improved to 7-6 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, the Westies broke the game open. Youssouf Keira scored off an assist from Romero at the 43:28 mark, Malik Ouro-Adei scored off an assist from Bobby Severino 3:17 later, and Canan scored off an assist from Romero at 63:00. Angel Mendez capped the scoring with an assist to Severino at 74:35.
The goals for Ouro-Adei and Mendez were the first varsity goals. Beyley made six saves to post the shutout.
Prior to the qualification game, the team fell on some hard times. Wsst Haven saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-1 home loss to Notre Dame.
Evan Fletcher led the Green Knights with three goals, Reamor Curis scored twice, and Julian Kuboz scored once. West Haven’s goal came from Walter Romero off an assist from Bryan Monge.
Yahzeel Beyley made seven saves in the loss for the Westies. Greyson James made eight saves for Notre Dame.
After winning five straight games, West Haven lost its second in a row with a 3-1 loss at Guilford. With the loss, West Haven fell to 5-4.
Wilson Canan scored an unassisted goal for the Westies, while Mattteo Pelissero, Stephano Jarrin, and Kieran Keefe all scored for Guilford.
Guilford held a 12-8 shot advantage in the game. Beyley made 11 saves for the Westies.
West Haven was looking to get back on the winning track when the squad traveled to play Amity on Friday. Falling behind quickly did not help as the Westies dropped a 2-1 decision.
The third straight loss for West Haven saw West Haven fall to 5-5 on the year.
The Spartans scored twice in the first half on tallied by Matteo Santin at the 14 minute mark and Blake Wegman at the 21:24 mark.
Despite holding a 17-13 shot advantage in the contest, West Haven was unable to break through until Walter Romero scored off an assist from Pedro Furtado with seven minutes left in regulation.
Despite the pressure, West Haven never got closer. Beyley made 11 saves in the loss, while Amity’s William Keenan made 16.
Looking to end its losing streak, West Haven traveled to Hamden in hopes of sweeping the season series. Instead, it was Hamden using a late goal to top West Haven 1-0 at Hamden High.
The fourth consecutive loss for the Westies dropped their record to 5-6 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, Hamden’s Johan Zuniga scored at the 68:32 mark for the lone tally of the contest.
West Haven held a 12-11 shot advantage with Beyley making 10 saves.
West Haven got back to the .500 mark with a 2-1 victory over Shelton. With the victory, West Haven improved to 6-6 on the year.
Romero scored off an assist from Nate Charron and West Haven was also the beneficiary of an own goal by Shelton.
Beyley made 13 saves in the win as West Haven held a 16-15 shot advantage.
West Haven football team won its fourth straight game with a 46-21 victory at Norwich Free Academy Saturday afternoon. With the win, West Haven improved to 4-1 on the season.
The Westies led 20-0 after one quarter and cruised from there with a 46-7 lead at the half. Conlan set the tone with three first quarter touchdowns, two in the air and one on the ground.
Conlan opened the scoring with a 47-yard touchdown strike to Dixon, then ran 74 yards for a score, before completing a 48-yard scoring strike to Hannans.
Harris sandwiched touchdown runs of one yard and two yards around a Norwich Free Academy score, before DaSilva scored on a 52-yard interception return, and Kingston Snape ran in from 24 yards before the half.
In what was a throwback start time to a high school football game, West Haven, then the No. 10 team in the GameTimeCT Top Ten poll, clearly needed time to adjust.
When the Westies did, they kept going.
Behind a defense which intercepted three Hamden passes and held the Green Dragons to led than 50 yards rushing, West Haven topped Hamden, 40-14, in a Southern Connecticut Conference contest at Hamden High.
Andrevion Dixon scored on both sides of the ball, Nick Conlan threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns, and West Haven was opportunistic on defense to improve to 3-1 on the year.
Hamden awakened West Haven early, needing just six plays to move 80 yards, capped with a 37-yard Evelio Lugo to Nazir Shoffner Obas touchdown pass 3 minutes, 18 seconds into the game for a 7-0 lead.
West Haven needed just seven plays and 75 yards to answer when Conlan connected with Dixon for a 25-yard score. The extra point was blocked, keeping the Green Dragons in front.
The West Haven defense then took over.
With Hamden driving, Rui DaSilva picked off a Lugo pass and appeared to return the interception for a score. A penalty denied the touchdown, but Coryon Harris ran in from four yards out three plays later for a 12-7 lead with 1:50 gone by in the second quarter.
Kadear Dembele and the West Haven defense held the Green Dragons to negative yardage on the next possession, before Conlan hit Tahmayn Thompson with a 21-yard scoring strike and a 20-7 advantage with 6:39 left in the half.
Tamarion Lafortune intercepted Lugo on Hamden’s first possession of the third quarter and Dixon followed suit the next time Hamden touched the ball.
After a tipped ball by Caleb Oakes, Dixon returned his interception 40 yards for a score and a 27-7 lead with 1:55 left in the third quarter.
Hamden did respond as Lugo continued to put the ball in the air. Finishing the contest with 253 yards and a pair of touchdowns passing, Lugo connected with Xaviare Ager for a 36-yard score to get within 27-14 with 9:48 left in the game.
Any momentum Hamden gained was quickly taken away when the Westies marched 56 yards in three plays, capped with Conlan’s 2-yard run.
West Haven closed the scoring with a 3-yard Conlan to Caron Hannans scoring strike with 46 seconds remaining.
Conlan threw for 160 yards and three touchdowns and also rushed for 105 yards and a score. Harris ran for 63 yards and a score.
The West Haven volleyball team was attempting to get into postseason mode. After falling 3-0 against Foran, the Westies fell to 1-12 and must win their final seven matches to qualify for the postseason. West Haven fell, 25-18, 25-22, and 25-16.
Sarah Davey led the Westies with 19 assists, nine digs, and four aces. Avery Criscio had eight digs, Sam Close added eight kills and five digs, Esther Ortiz had seven digs, while Chloe Payne had six kills and four digs.
Jayden Braacker had seven digs and Mia Roman finished with six digs.
The postseason dreams for West Haven ended. Needing to win the rest of their regular season contests to qualify for postseason play, West Haven fell at Wilbur Cross.
The 25-21, 15-25, 25-19, 25-23 loss dropped the Westies to 1-13 on the season.
Davey had a big match for the Westies with 15 assists, nine digs, three aces and three kills. Criscio added 10 digs and three aces, Close had 10 aces and eight kills, Payne and Roman each chipped in five kills and three digs, while Ortiz and Braacker each added six digs.
West Haven fell to Sacred Heart Academy, 25-22, 25-17, 25-8 Friday evening.
Davey led the Westies with 15 assists, three aces, three digs, and one kill. Close added nine kills, one block and one ace, Roman had eight digs, two kills, and one ace, and Criscio had six digs and one ace.
After topping Hillhouse, West Haven won its second match in a row and improved to 3-14 with a 26-24, 25-18, 26-24 victory at Jonathan Law.
Davey was stellar with 20 assists and nine digs, Criscio had 11 digs, three aces, and three kills, Camila Queiroz had 10 digs and three aces, Payne added nine kills, three digs and three aces, Close had six, kills, four aces, and two assists, and Kearlze Marquis had six kills.
The girls soccer team fell to Jonathan Law, 5-0, in West Haven. Lulu Sebas made three saves in the loss as Law scored three times in the first half and two more in the second half.
Emily Vella and Layla Alogna each scored twice for Law, while Gabby Rodriguez made three saves and Tamlyn Maher made two.
The team dropped its fourth straight decision and fell to 2-10-1 with an 8-2 loss against Mercy Wednesday evening in West Haven. Jaylyn Powell scored both West Haven goals.
Mercy scored five times in the first half and never looked back with a 5-0 halftime advantage. Lulu Sebas made seven saves in the loss for West Haven.
