
The West Haven boys basketball team won its fourth straight game with a 70-44 victory at Guilford. With the victory, West Haven improved to 7-1 on the year.
K’naan Morris led the Westies with 23 points, while Aaron Johnson had 14 points, and Trew Kitson and Loshon Roman each scored 11 points. The Westies led 30-23 at the half, before blowing the game open in the second half.
Roman had seven points and Morris added five points in the second quarter. Morris led the way in the second half with 11 points in the third quarter and 18 in the half. Johnson scored 10 points in the second half, including six points in the third quarter.
The winning streak reached five games for West Haven with a 63-48 victory over Xavier. West Haven (8-1) was led by Johnson with 17 points, Jordan Sirabionian scored 13 points, and Morris added 12.
The Westies led 14-12 after one quarter and 28-20 at the half. Johnson had nine first half points, while Sirabionian had seven points in the opening half. Johnson and Sirabionian each scored six points in the fourth quarter.


West Haven won its sixth straight contest and improved to 9-1 with a 79-61 victory over Thomas Edison Vocational Technical School of New York.
The Westies used a smothering defense to take a 22-10 lead after one quarter, and a 45-31 lead at the half. The Westies had five players in double digits, led by Sirabionian with 18 points, Morris with 16, Kitson with 15, Johnson with 14, and Roman with 11.
Kitson scored seven points in the first quarter, while Roman and Morris each added five. Sirabionian and Morris each scored seven second quarter points, Johnson had five, and Roman added four.
West Haven won its seventh straight contest with an 88-40 victory at Hand. The win helped the Westies improve to 10-1 on the year.
The West Haven girls basketball team won its fourth game in a row and improved to 5-3 with a 48-38 victory at Foran.
Tiranke Keita led the Westies with 17 points, while Amayia Ortiz added six points in the win.
The Westies kept on rolling with a 65-47 victory over Cheshire. With their fifth straight victory, the Westies improved to 6-3 on the year.
Noelle Lawrence led the way with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Tiranke Keita had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Fatoumata Keita added 14 points and 10 rebounds.
West Haven jumped out to a 16-7 lead, and took a 30-19 advantage to the half. The Westies led by 15 points after three quarters of play.
Lawrence scored 10 points in the second quarter and 14 total in the first half. Tiranke Keita helped the first quarter run with six points.
West Haven improved to 7-3 with a 72-62 victory at Hand. Lawrence was the story of the game as she scored 30 points, including her 1,000th career point, making her only the eighth basketball player in West Haven history to do so.
Tiranke Keita scored 22 points, and Timyra Rogers scored 13 in the win.
The West Haven boys hockey team is searching for offense. Traveling to Hamden to play Cheshire, the Westies were blanked, 5-0, dropping their fourth straight game and falling to 1-5 on the year.
The game was scoreless until the Rams scored three times in a span of 2:47 in the second period to take a 3-0 lead with seven minutes remaining in the middle period. West Haven never recovered, and Cheshire added a pair of goals in the final 3:40 of the contest.
Celebrating the 100th anniversary of West Haven hockey, the Westies did not exactly get off to a quick start. Trailing 2-0, West Haven rallied for four straight goals, on its way to a 4-3 victory over North Haven.
With the win, West Haven snapped its four-game losing streak and improved to 2-5 on the season.
West Haven started its comeback in the second period when Luca DiLegge scored an unassisted goal in front with 6:17 remaining.
The Westies then won the contest with the first three goals of the third period. Jack Wellins evened the game with a shot in front off assists from Sean Bush and Connor Moriarty 1:14 in, before Ryan Alves tipped a Trey Wanerka shot in front for a 3-2 lead 2:09 later.
West Haven tallied the eventual winner with 5:27 to go in regulation when Cam Lipford finished a 2-on-1 break with Leo Mazuroski. Wellins also assisted on the goal.
North Haven scored with 1:10 remaining to get within one, but Kai Lupa made several big saves in the final minute to preserve the win.
West Haven won its second straight game and improved to 3-5 on the year with a 3-2 victory at Guilford.
Trailing 1-0 in the second period, DiLegge scored off an assist from Bush 2:05 later to even the game at one. Just 13 seconds later, the Westies had the lead as Kyle Guarino scored off assists from Bush and DiLegge.
Guilford evened the game late in the second period, but the Westies controlled play in the third period. When DiLegge scored with 8:02 remaining, the Westies were on their way to their third win of the season.
The West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy girls hockey team is in the win column. Behind five goals from Hailey Azzarone, the Westie Sharks topped Daniel Hand, 6-4.
Azzarone gave the Westie Sharks a 1-0 lead 22 seconds into the game, before Paige Welch scored off an assist from Caitlyn Biancur with 31 seconds remaining in the opening period for a 2-1 lead.
Hand then scored the next three goals and led 4-2 with 11:07 remaining in the third. Azzarone then took over with an unassisted goal with 7:37 left, and the tying goal off an assist from Stella Porto with 3:09 to go in the third.
Azzarone gave the Westie Sharks a 5-4 lead with 2:53 remaining in the game, before adding an insurance goal with 32 seconds left off an assist from Porto for a 6-4 advantage.
Rylee DeSanto made 25 saves in the win for the Westie Sharks.
The West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy girls hockey team fell to 1-5-1 with a 2-1 loss against Masuk.
The Westie Sharks scored their only goal of the game when Hailey Azzarone scored in the first period off assists from Caty Aloi and Alina Lipinsky at the 9:32 mark.
Masuk scored single goals in each of the second and third periods to pick up the victory.
The Sharks fell to 1-6-1 with a 2-1 overtime loss to New Canaan. Megan Losito was outstanding in goal, making 46 saves, including 15 in each of the first three periods.
After two scoreless periods, West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy took a 1-0 lead at the 3:05 mark of the third period when Azzarone scored off assists from Emma Galati and Elena Losito.
New Canaan finally broke through and answered 5:17 later, before winning in overtime.
The Westie Sharks were then shut out in their next two contests, falling to Amity 2-0, and Avon 1-0. West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy fell to 1-8-1 with the losses.
West Haven qualified for the postseason with a 67-44 victory over Career. The win was West Haven’s seventh in a row, and helped the Westies improve to 8-3 on the year.
Fatoumata Keita led the way with 27 points and 14 rebounds. Lawrence was solid throughout, finishing with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists.
The Westies took control of the game with a 21-9 run in the first quarter to take a 32-17 lead at the half. Fatoumata Keita had eight points in the opening quarter, while Tiranke Keita scored six points in the opening eight minutes and finished the game with nine points.
