The West Haven boys’ lacrosse team wrapped up its regular season looking to prepare for the CIAC playoffs on Wednesday afternoon at Amity. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, the Spartans jumped on the boys early, taking a 6-0 lead by halftime on the way to a 9-1 win. The Westies did get on the board on a goal by Mike Kelly with 53 seconds left in the third quarter. Kevin Moriarty made 26 saves in net for West Haven to try to keep the Westies within striking distance.
On Saturday morning, the Blue Devils hosted the Fairfield Ludlowe Falcons at Ken Strong Stadium in the Qualifying Round of the CIAC Playoffs. The Falcons scored 49 seconds into the game and then reeled off nine, more goals in the last 6:12 of the first quarter to take a 10-0 lead. The Falcons continued the onslaught and when they scored with 9.4 seconds left in the half and again with 1.1 seconds left, Ludlowe held a commanding 19-0 lead. The Falcons tacked on two, more goals in the second half but, Connor Fowler was able to take a pass at the left side of the net and spoil the shutout with a goal for the Blue Devils with 8:37 left in the game for a 21-1 final. Kevin Moriarty started in between the pipes for the Westies before giving away to Anthony Campagnuolo with 4:29 left in the third quarter and they combined to make 19 saves for West Haven.
The softball team hosted the Amity Spartans in the quarterfinals of the Southern Connecticut Conference on Monday afternoon at Biondi Field. The Blue Devils struck in the first inning after Veronica Lynn walked, stole second and scored on a single by Kailey Carrano to give West Haven a 1-0 lead. The lead was short-lived though with the Spartans putting up two runs in the top of the second to grab a 2-1 lead. Amity tacked on two, more runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead. The Westies threatened in the bottom of the inning but, the Spartans were able to wriggle out of a bases loaded jam. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, after lightning halted the game in the top of the seventh, the ensuing deluge robbed the girls of their final chance to swing the bats in the 4-1 loss. Carrano had three hits, while Morgan Peryer, Ashlynn O’Keefe and Kasey Marron all had singles for West Haven. Ivy Santos went the distance, in the circle for the Blue Devils in the loss.
The girls were seeded No. 3 in the CIAC Class LL Playoffs when the bracket was announced on Friday and received a first-round bye. The Westies played the winner of the Greenwich/Ridgefield on Wednesday and if victorious will play at Biondi Field on Friday in the CIAC quarterfinals.
