After suffering a its first loss of the season against Hamden, the West Haven football team has responded in fine fashion. The Westies have bounced back with a pair of wins, including a 27-20 victory over Fairfield Warde Friday evening in Fairfield.
Trailing 7-0 in the second quarter, West Haven got on the board and cut the deficit to one when freshman Nick Conlan connected with Jamaine Galloway on a 10-yard scoring pass. When the kick failed, West Haven trailed 7-6 at the half.
The third quarter saw a different West Haven team as the Westies rallied for three touchdowns and took a 27-14 lead.
West Haven took the lead for good when Paul Williams ran in from two yards out on West Haven’s opening possession. When Conlan hit Trevor Tompkins on the two-point conversion, West Haven led 14-7.
After Warde fumbled the ensuing kickoff, Conlan then helped West Haven to a 21-7 lead when he connected with Chauncey Evans on a 10-yard scoring strike. Raul Sanchez kicked the extra point to give West Haven a 21-7 lead.
Ahead 21-14, West Haven scored the eventual winning touchdown late in the third quarter.
Following a big 77-yard run by Trevor Tompkins on third down, Amir Nakome scored on an 8-yard run. The conversion failed, keeping West Haven on top 27-21.
Tompkins finished with 141 yards on the ground.
The volleyball team lost its second consecutive match and fell to 1-6 with a 3-1 home defeat against Lauralton Hall Monday evening. The scores of the match were 25-17, 23-25, 25-19, 25-12.
Junior Jenna Johnson ran the offense with 20 assists, while also adding five digs, three kills, and two aces. Jordyn Johnson added 10 digs on the defensive side and had two aces, Mckayla Fowler had seven digs and four kills, Tanasia Fidalgo had eight kills, three aces and two digs, while Asia Ford added eight kills, two blocks and two aces.
Morgan also had five digs and Branyelis Brito chipped in four digs.
Looking to get on a run, West Haven was poised for a good start Wednesday evening. Leading two games to one, West Haven had a chance to get back in the win column.
Unfortunately for the Westies, they could not close out the match and Foran won the last two games to defeat the Westies 25-20, 19-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-9.
With its third consecutive loss, West Haven fell to 1-7 on the season.
Jenna Johnson led the way for the Westies with 19 assists, five aces, and five kills on offense, and eight digs on defense. Ford and Fidalgo each had 10 kills, with Ford adding four aces.
Fowler chipped in six digs, three kills, and two aces, Jordyn Johnson played well with 10 digs and five aces, Dulcemaria Castillo added four kills and three digs, and Brito had four digs.
West Haven dropped its fourth straight decision and fell to 1-8 on the year with a 3-0 loss at Lyman Hall Friday evening. The scores of the contest were 25-19, 25-13, 25-19.
Castillo led the Westies with 11 digs, while Jordyn Johnson had eight digs. Ford chipped in six kills, while Jenna Johnson had six assists and two digs. Fowler, Fidalgo, and Branyelis Brito each had three digs for West Haven.
West Haven continues to battle. Unfortunately for the Westies, the wins are not following.
In a close contest with Hamden, West Haven was unable to pick up the victory as the Green Dragons prevailed 25-19, 25-20, 25-19 at West Haven High Monday evening. With its fifth straight loss, West Haven fell to 1-9 on the year.
Fowler, Anaelecea Turcio and Castillo led the way with six digs apiece. Jenna Johnson had six assists and five aces, and Fidalgo added five kills.
West Haven got off to a good start Wednesday evening against Sheehan. The Westies were unable to maintain that start.
As a result, Sheehan came back from a first game loss to defeat West Haven, 9-25, 25-14, 25-10, 25-15 at Sheehan High In Wallingford. The loss was West Haven’s sixth straight and dropped the team to 1-10 on the year.
Jenna Johnson ran the offense with 19 assists, while also adding four digs and three aces. Fidalgo had 11 kills, while Ford had eight kills. Defensively, Fowler and Castillo led the way with 11 digs.
West Haven lost its seventh consecutive match with a 3-0 decision against East Haven Friday evening. With the 25-22, 25-19, 25-17 loss, West Haven fell to 1-11 on the year.
Jenna Johnson led the West Haven offense with 10 assists, and also was stellar on defense with 11 digs. Castillo had nine digs, Jordyn Johnson had seven digs, and Ford had three blocks. Fidalgo had four kills, and Ford added a pair in the loss.
The West Haven girls soccer team picked up its third victory of the year with a 3-1 decision over Foran at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven Tuesday evening. With the victory, the Westies improved to 3-2-2 on the year.
After a slow start in which Foran used a goal by Lauren Ardolini just seven minutes in to take a 1-0 lead, the Westies rode the play of freshman Jaylyn Powell to pick up their play in the game.
With Powell in the contest, the Westies needed just 16 minutes to respond as a perfect cross from senior Madison Lentine was converted by Powell for the equalizer at the 23:37 mark.
With the game even at the break, Powell made sure the Westies came out on top with her second of the night at the 63:28 mark for a 2-1 lead. Lentine then iced the contest with an insurance goal at the 82:25 mark off assists from Cori Severino and Julia Merola.
Kassidy Carrano made nine saves for the Westies, who were outshot 10-8.
West Haven fell to 3-3-2 with a 3-0 loss at North Haven Friday evening. Despite holding a 9-8 shot advantage, the Westies could not find the back of the net. Carrano made five saves in the loss.
After a tough defeat Friday evening, West Haven returned to action Monday evening with a home contest against Hamden. After falling behind early, junior Julia Tsakonas took over.
Scoring four times, including three in the second half, Tsakonas helped West Haven rally from a two-goal deficit to defeat the Green Dragons 6-2 at Ken Strong Stadium.
Trailing 2-0 after allowing two goals in the first 17:20 of the contest, West Haven cut the deficit in half when Tsakonas scored off an assist from freshman Jaylyn Powell at the 20:51 mark.
The score remained the same until West Haven took over in the second half. Cori Severino scored off an assist from Maya Bermudez 2:26 into the half, before Riley Severino’s corner was headed in by Bermudez 6:03 later for the go-ahead tally.
Tsakonas iced the game from there as she scored the final three goals. Cori Severino assisted for a 4-2 advantage, and Lentine picked up a helper on the final tally of the game.
West Haven held a 13-5 shot advantage in the game. Carrano made three saves in the win.
The boys soccer team responded nicely from its first defeat of the year with a 9-1 road victory over Coginchaug Tuesday afternoon. With the win, West Haven improved to 4-1-2 on the season.
Senior Mubarak Issa led the way with three goals, Donaldo Yanez had three assists, and Sebastian Navarro finished with a goal and two assists as the Westies held a 33-3 shot advantage in the contest.
Seniors Holden Axelrod and Wilson Cordova combined on the win, making one save in a dominant West Haven effort.
West Haven took a 5-1 lead at the half as Navarro scored off an assist from Yanez just 5 minutes, 17 seconds in. The Westies increased the margin to 2-0 when Issa scored the first of his two goals 2:17 later off an assist from Rafael Gazcon. When Gazcon scored at the 12:26 mark, West Haven increased its margin to 3-0.
Coginchaug got on the board at the 20:20 mark, but a goal by Issa, assisted by Navarro, and another by Keizer Tandazo off an assist from Yanez put West Haven ahead 5-1 with 7:15 left in the half.
Issa opened the scoring in the second half off an assist from Navarro, before Marcos, Victor Lorenzo, and Jonathan Mendez capped the scoring. Yanez and Marcos assisted on the final two goals.
West Haven dropped its second decision of the year with a 3-1 loss against Amity Friday evening at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven.
The Spartans put the Westies behind early as Diogo Artaza scored 13 minutes, 11 seconds into the contest. Artaza’s goal held up until the Westies knotted the contest 16 minutes later.
Mubarak Issa evened the game for West Haven when he scored at the 29:45 mark off an assist from Yanez.
Luca Santin put Amity on top 2-1 just 10:11 later. The Westies battled, but could not get the equalizer. Artaza scored his second of the game with 13:14 left as Amity posted a 3-1 victory.
West Haven held a 13-7 shot advantage in the loss. Brian Carew made five saves for the Westies.
After suffering its second loss of the season, West Haven immediately got back on the winning track.
Led by a pair of goals from Issa, West Haven improved to 5-2-2 with a 4-1 victory over Sheehan at Ken Strong Stadium Saturday afternoon. West Haven dominated from the start, outshooting Sheehan 18-5.
Issa allowed the Westies to take control of the contest as he scored twice in the game’s first 24 minutes. Rivadera assisted on Issa’s first goal at the 21:52 mark, before Collin Charon picked up the first of his two assists on a goal by Issa at the 23:11 mark.
The 2-0 lead remained until the game’s final 12 minutes. Victor Lorenzo put the game away with a goal off an assist from Charon with 10:57 left, before Alan Hernandez assisted on a goal by Rivadera with 7:20 to go.
The swim team fell to 1-5 with a 99-82 loss against Shelton Thursday evening. West Haven had several first and second place finishes, but it was not enough in the loss.
The 200 medley relay team of Lauren Blake, Molly Wilson, Kaelyn Falanga and Victoria Acuna won in 2 minutes, 5.89 seconds. The 400 free relay team of Acuna, Blake, Olivia DeLauri, and Falanga won in 4:28.76.
The 200 freestyle saw Acuna place second in Acuna 2.33.22, while Falanga won the 200IM in 2:30.91.
Diving saw West Haven place in the top three as Kaylee Taulty was first with 159.40 points, Amber Militrano was second with 130.15 points, and Emma Ryan was third with 118.05 points.
The 100 fly saw Falanga place second in 1:09.03, Blake was second in the 100 back in 1:18.61, and Wilson won the 100 breast in 1:22.72.
The West Haven boys cross-country team placed third in a meet with Shelton and Foran Monday afternoon in Shelton.
West Haven’s top runners were senior Justin Rodriguez, who finished 12th in 19 minutes, 24 seconds. Sophomore Matt Pagan was 13th in 19:28, and senior Alex Potter was 14th in 19:33.
On the girls’ side, junior Amanda Gullo placed 15th in 25:24.
