The West Haven football team is off to a quick start in the season. While it started slowly, the Westies rolled to a 47-20 victory over Guilford at Ken Strong Stadium.
After failing to get on the scoreboard in the first quarter, West Haven (3-0) took an 18-0 lead in the second quarter, before rolling to a 34-13 lead after three. Deven Robinson and Demarco Eady each scored twice in the victory.
Robinson used a 5-yard run to give West Haven a 6-0 lead, before quarterback Nick Conlan connected with Eady for a 45-yard scoring play and a 12-0 advantage. When Trevor Tompkins ran in from five yards out, the Westies held an 18-0 lead.
Guilford made things interesting with a late touchdown in the second quarter and got within 18-13 on the first score of the third quarter, but the Westies pulled away, scoring the next two touchdowns in the third and going on a 29-0 run.
Robinson’s one-yard run and the two-point conversion from Tompkins put West Haven on top 26-13, before Eady used a 44-yard punt return, coupled with Conlan’s pass to Avyon Graham on the conversion for a 34-13 advantage.
West Haven iced the game to start the fourth quarter when Armani Reid scored on a 38-yard strike from Conlan, before Jah’zire Massey scored on a 34-yard run for a 47-13 lead.
West Haven is focused on one game at a time. That mindset has worked well for the Westies.
Behind three touchdowns apiece from Robinson and Massey, and two touchdown passes from Conlan, West Haven rolled to a 54-0 victory over Hillhouse Friday evening at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven. The explosive West Haven offense has now scored 101 points in its last two games.
West Haven (4-0) led 28-0 after one quarter and 48-0 at the half.
Robinson gave the Westies a 7-0 lead when he ran in from one yard out, Armani Reid helped increase the lead to 13-0 when he hauled in a 28-yard touchdown pass from Conlan, and a 13-yard scamper by Robinson increased West Haven’s lead to 20-0. Massey close the first quarter scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run, followed by the conversion run from Tompkins.
Massey increased the lead to 34-0 with a 5-yard run to start the second quarter, and Conlan’s second touchdown pass, a 30-yard scoring strike to Massey increased the lead to 41-0. When Robinson ran in from 20 yards out, West Haven led 48-0 at the half.
West Haven’s final points came in the fourth quarter when Joey Copela ran in from one yard out.
The West Haven volleyball team won its third consecutive match and improved to 4-1 on the season with a 3-2 victory over Branford. The Westies lost the first two games, but battled back in the dramatic victory to win by scores of 21-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-8, 15-13.
After falling in the first two games, the Westies battled to win the third game, before controlling the fourth game. A back-and-forth fifth game went to the Westies to preserve their third straight victory.
Jenna Johnson ran the offense with 25 assists, while also adding seven digs and four aces. Olivia McDonnell and Asia Ford were forces at the net as McDonnell finished with 16 kills, four blocks, and four digs, while Ford had 14 aces, eight kills and eight digs.
Alison Frazer was stellar defensively with 16 digs, while Tanasia Fidalgo had six kills and four digs, and Jordyn Johnson, Dulcemaria Castillo, and Astrid Portugal Morales each had five digs in the win.
The winning streak has reached four matches for West Haven. With another impressive team effort, the Westies improved to 5-1 with a 25-8 25-19 25-18 victory at Norwalk.
For the Westies, it was not just one player which made an impact. Coldren’s crew all contributed in some phase of the game.
Offensively, Ford led the way with nine kills and eight aces. Jenna Johnson had six assists and three aces, McDonnell had four aces and three kills, and Portugal Morales added five aces in the win.
On the defensive side, Frazer led the Westies with six digs. Jenna Johnson had five digs, Castillo added four digs, and Ford had three blocks.
The winning ways continued for West Haven as the Westies posted their fifth straight victory with a 3-0 home victory over Hillhouse. The 25-18, 25-9, 25-15 victory improved West Haven’s record to 6-1 on the year.
Jenna Johnson led the way for West Haven with nine assists, five aces, and three digs. Ford had eight aces, five kills, four blocks, and two digs, and Castillo added four aces and four digs. Jordyn Johnson chipped in five aces, Frazer had two aces and four digs, and McDonnell had two aces and four kills.
West Haven saw its five-match winning streak come to an end with a 3-1 loss at Guilford. The loss dropped the Westies to 6-2 on the year.
Jenna Johnson led the Westies with 19 assists and 16 digs, Astrid Portugal Morales had 11 digs, seven kills and three assists, while Jordyn Johnson had 14 digs and Bianka Portugal Morales added 11 digs.
Alison Frazer added eight digs, Ford had six kills and six digs, and Olivia McDonnell had seven kills.
West Haven volleyball team needed just one day to get back on the winning track. The Westies inched closer to the postseason with a 3-1 victory at Foran.
The 25-19, 16-25, 25-12, 25-16 victory helped the Westies improve to 7-2 on the year.
Jenna Johnson controlled the game for West Haven with 33 assists, while also adding seven digs and two kills. Frazer had 15 digs, McDonnell added 15 kills, while Ford had 10 kills, 10 digs, three blocks, and three aces.
Fidalgo had six kills, and Astrid Portugal Morales added six digs.
West Haven fell to Shelton Saturday afternoon 3-0. The 25-23, 25-18, 25-22 loss dropped the Westies to 7-3 on the year.
Johnson led the Westies with 16 assists and 11 digs. Frazer was stellar on defense with 19 digs, Ford had 11 digs, seven kills, and four blocks, while Castillo added 10 digs.
Jordyn Johnson chipped in six digs, Astrid Portugal Morales had five digs, and McDonnell chipped in five kills.
The West Haven girls soccer team dropped two in a row with the losses, the Westies fell to 1-3 on the season.
West Haven has had troubles finding the back of the net with all three losses coming by shutout. The latest two losses were no different as West Haven dropped a 5-0 decision at Branford, and followed with a 2-0 home loss against Hand on Tuesday evening at Ken Strong Stadium.
Goalkeeper Kassidy Carrano was a bright spot in both losses as the senior made nine saves in the loss to Branford and added 12 more, some in spectacular fashion, against Hand.
West Haven team moved to 2-3-1 with a tie against Amity and a victory over Shelton. Carrano stood out in each contest, combining for 18 saves.
The Westies played to a 1-1 draw against Amity. Senior Abigail Phelan scored 26 minutes into the contest off an assist from Ariana Izzo on a corner kick.
That was all the scoring in the game for the Westies, but Carrano made sure West Haven left with at least a tie, making 11 saves.
West Haven picked up its second victory with a 1-0 road victory over Shelton.
After a scoreless first half, the Westies got the only goal they needed when senior Julia Tsakonas scored at the 60-minute mark.
The West Haven defense and Carrano made the lead hold up as Carrano made seven saves in the shutout victory. The shutout was the second of the year for the senior goalkeeper.
West Haven won its second straight contest with a 6-4 victory over Hamden Tuesday evening. With the win, West Haven improved to 3-3-1 on the year.
The Westies, who played with a new formation, were led by sophomore Jaylyn Powell who scored four goals and added an assist. Senior Julia Tsakonas scored twice and had two assists as West Haven built an early lead on its way to the third win of the season.
Abigail Phelan assisted on the first goal by Tsakonas, while Powell assisted on the second goal by Tsakonas. Powell saw her first two goals assisted by Tsakonas.
Carrano made five saves in the win.
The boys soccer team fell to 1-2-1 with a 4-1 loss at Cheshire. The Westies got on the scoreboard first, but the Rams finished with four unanswered goals in the victory.
Cheshire held a 19-10 shot advantage in the contest with West Haven’s Yahzeel Beyley making 12 saves in the loss.
Emmanuell Gordon gave West Haven a 1-0 lead when he scored off an assist from Collin Charron 3 minutes, 52 seconds into the game.
That was all the scoring for the Westies as Cheshire evened the contest 7:04 later, then took the lead for good 3:57 into the second half.
West Haven improved to 2-2-1 with a 2-1 victory over Career/Hillhouse.
The Westies controlled play with a 14-4 shot advantage, and Beyley made three saves in the win.
Trailing 1-0 to start the second half, Jared Yarwaye swung the momentum back in West Haven’s favor when he scored off an assist from Charron 2:04 into the second half.
The game remained even at one until the final five minutes when Rafael Gazcon scored off a penalty kick with 4:15 remaining for the 2-1 win.
West Haven fell to 2-3-1 with a 1-0 loss at Hand-Madison Tuesday evening. West Haven was outshot 19-7 in the contest, but goalkeeper Beyley made five saves to keep the game close.
Hand’s lone goal came at 9:52 from Matt Campari. Charlie Wira made three saves in the shutout for Hand.
The West Haven cross-country team traveled to Guilford, where the Grizzlies came out victorious, followed by Amity and West Haven.
It was a big day for the Westies as 10 runners ran and all set a personal best. Matt Pagan finished in 18 minutes, 20 seconds, Kittikhom Tighe ran in 18:25, Dan Potter finished in 19:05, and Maryangel Cruz finished in 25:42.
All of the runners improved by two minutes over last week’s meet.
