Jesuits eke out win over Westies, 17-14

The West Haven football team fell to 3-2 on the year with a 17-14 Homecoming loss against Fairfield Prep.

The Westies never led in the contest as a defensive first quarter saw the Jesuits take a 7-0 lead on a Jeremiah Langston 40-yard touchdown reception late in the first quarter. A Prep touchdown run had the Westies trailing by 14, before West Haven got on the board.

Mason Wright connected with Trew Kitson for a 36-yard scoring strike to get within seven points after Justin Chacon’s extra point.

Following a Fairfield Prep field goal, Wright connected with Aaron Johnson for a 6-yard score, but West Haven never got closer.

Wright threw for 171 yards, and Amir Daniley ran for 80 yards in the loss.

After a gut-wrenching loss to Staples, the West Haven football team needed to get back on track quickly. Outscoring Xavier by 20 points in the second half, the Westies cruised to a 41-14 victory over the Falcons at Ken Strong Stadium.

The victory helped West Haven improve to 3-1 on the year as the Westies used three touchdown passes in the opening half for the 21 points.

Wright hit Kitson with a 55-yard scoring strike for a 7-0 lead, before a 12-yard connection to C.J. Sutton had the Westies on top 13-7. Trailing 14-13, Wright hit Daniley with an 8-yard strike before Caden Stanley ran in the conversion for a 21-14 advantage.

Two more touchdown passes and an interception return helped the Westies pull away in the second half.

Wright hit Cordell Barrow for a 5-yard score, then connected with Kitson for the second time on a 33-yard scoring pass. Ja’Kari Harris capped the scoring with a 50-yard interception return for a score.

The West Haven volleyball team improved to 11-2 with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-18 home win over North Haven.

Jen Ngo had a big game for the Westies with 30 assists and 10 digs, while Chloe Payne was big offensively with 15 kills. Dominique Fidalgo also had a big day with nine kills and six digs, Amani Dumbuya and Gulianna Ruggeiro each had 18 digs, and Mia Roman had seven digs. Marley Wilson added six kills and five digs, and Ruggerio had six kills in the win.

After a 3-1 loss to Sacred Heart Academy, the Westies rebounded with a 3-0 Senior Night victory over Career. The 25-10, 25-16, 25-7 win helped the Westies improve to 12-3 on the year.

Ngo ran the offense with 13 assists, Sam Close had seven aces and four kills, Fidalgo had five aces, Wilson had six kills, Payne finished with five kills, and Elena Cortes added four aces.

The West Haven volleyball team fell to 13-4 with a 3-1 loss against Sacred Heart Academy. The 25-20, 25-20, 10-25, 25-9 loss snapped a two-match winning streak for the Westies.

Ngo ran the offense with 22 assists, Wilson had nine kills, and Fidalgo added six kills. Dumbuya led the defensive effort with 10 dis, Ruggeiro added eight digs, Masha Shek had seven digs, and Mia Roman and Payne each added six digs in the loss.

The West Haven boys soccer team improved to 5-0-4 with a 2-1 home victory over Hamden. The victory snapped a string of four consecutive ties for the Westies.

The game was even at one at the half with West Haven’s goal scored by Pablo Feregrino-Flores. Robens Mervenson Prophete scored the eventual winner in the second half for the Westies.

The Westies won their second straight contest and improved to 6-0-4 with an 8-1 Senior Day victory over Foran. Bryan Monge led the West Haven offense with three goals and an assist, while Pedro Furtado added a goal and an assist.

West Haven led 6-0 at the half on three goals from Monge, and single tallies from Robens Mervenson, Dylan Petrie, and Juan Armijos. Mervenson scored on a breakaway to start the scoring, while Armijos capped the first half scoring in front.

Ramy Mandhouj and Furtado scored in the final 11 minutes of the contest to seal the victory.

West Haven won its third straight game and improved to 7-0-4 with an 8-0 victory at Sheehan. Furtado, Joel Goodlow, Alix Obas, Cadian Jones-Gaywood, Mike Villagomez, Akeem Traore, Youssouf Keira, and Pablo Feregrino-Flores had the goals.

The West Haven girls soccer team saw its five-game unbeaten streak come to an end with a 7-0 loss at Lauralton Hall. The Westies trailed 3-0 at the half and never recovered in falling to 4-4-1 on the year.

The Westies dropped their fourth in a row and fell to 4-7-1 with a 3-2 loss against Johnathan Law on Senior Night.

With goalkeeper Olivia Petrie making several outstanding first half saves, the Westies went to the half with a 1-0 lead as Amiyah Jones scored just 20 seconds into the contest.

West Haven extended the lead to 2-0 when Naomi Shubin scored off an assist from Jones 7:20 into the second half. Law’s Emily Vella then took over, scoring three times in the final 30 minutes to propel Law to the win.

The West Haven girls swim team fell to 0-6 on the year with a 95-80 loss at North Haven. The Westies won two relay events and three individual events in the loss.

The 200 medley relay team of Arianna Rose, Brooklynn Loehfelm, Sophia Delauri, and Emily Falanga won in 2 minutes, 19.40 seconds, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Delauri, Falanga, Loehfelm, and Rose won in 4:34.03. 

Delauri won the 500 freestyle in 6:29.28 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:20.12, while Rose won the 100 backstroke in 1:09.58.
