Swimming posts win over Hamden, wrestling places 18th at Class L Meet with Alex Barbour moving on to State Open, hockey split the week beating crosstown rival West Haven, and basketball suffers first loss of season in regular season finale.
Wrestling — On the heels of a third-place finish at the SCC Championship Meet last week, Alex Barbour continued his stellar wrestling placing fourth at the CIAC Class L Championship Meet. As a result, he will continue his season at the State Open Meet this coming weekend. Seeded second in his weight class, Barbour won three of his five matches in the two-day competition. He began the event with a pair of wins to stay in the championship bracket. He pinned Windsor’s Thomas Griggs and then won a 12-2 major decision over RHAM’s Harold Barnes. He would lose in the quarterfinal round via a 9-4 decision to Maloney’s Nick DeBaise. Barbour rebounded with a tough 2-0 decision over Newington’s Aiden Lozada before falling to Stan Godlewski in an equally tough match, losing via a 9-8 decision.
Swimming — Notre Dame won 10 of the 12 events in its swim meet against Hamden en route to a come-from-behind 92-89 win. It was the third win of the season for Notre Dame. With the Green Dragons holding a slight one-point lead heading into the final event – the 400 freestyle relay, the Green Knights won the event and as a result captured the win. The relay team of Sean McDermott, Aaron Abrina, Michael Iasalvatore, and Gavin Kanlong won the event. McDermott won four events while the trio of Bill Hinckley, Jonathan Farricielli, and Alex Ozonoff all won three events for the Green Knights.
Basketball — The basketball team went into its final regular season game against Cross on Friday, hoping for its second undefeated regular season in three years. Unfortunately, the Green Knights lost, 65-60, in overtime. Notre Dame found itself down 14 points early in the fourth quarter only to rally and tie the game on a Connor Raines layup with 10 seconds left in the game. Cross scored the first four points of the extra session and held on for the win. Notre Dame moved to 19-0 earlier in the week with a 48-41 win over Fairfield Prep. Notre Dame used a 9-2 run over the final two minutes to break a 39-39 tie. Jaiden Kimbro led Notre Dame against Prep with 12 points, while Raines was the Green Knights leading scorer with 17 against Cross.
Hockey — Connor Smith made 39 saves in posting a 4-0 shutout win over crosstown rival West Haven on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Notre Dame received four goals from four different players in the win. Charlie Andriole, Zach Schroeder, John-Michael Childs, and Connor Faughnan tallied goals. The Green Knights wound up splitting the week when they suffered a 3-1 loss to Fairfield Prep.
