The West Haven softball team opened its week with a trip to Branford and a matchup with the Hornets. The Blue Devils had their way with Branford scoring four runs in the first inning, two in the second, and four more in the third inning on their way to a 17-0 victory. Kailey Carrano led the Westies with three hits, including a double, a triple and five RBIs. Ivy Santos went the distance, allowing no runs on four hits in the circle.
On Tuesday afternoon, the girls headed back out on the road with a trip to Madison. The Westies managed only four hits and allowed four, unearned runs in a 5-1 loss to the Tigers. Makenna White led the Blue Devils with two of those hits while Veronica Lynn and Neve Krajcir picked up the other hits in a losing effort.
On Thursday evening, the Westies hosted the Sacred Heart Academy Sharks. The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a couple of Shark miscues. Morgan Preyer reached base on an error to lead off the inning, was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashlynn O’Keefe and then scored when the Sacred Heart infielder’s throw on Kailey Carrano’s grounder pulled the first baseman off the bag, allowing Preyer to scamper home. Unfortunately for the Westies that was the only run they could plate while the Sharks rallied for four runs in a 4-1 defeat of the Blue Devils.
This week, the girls traveled to play Hillhouse on Tuesday, hosted Jonathan Law on Wednesday, and host the Green Dragons of Hamden on Thursday at 7.
The baseball team has been much more competitive as of late and after two, tough losses, the Blue Devils were able to break through with a victory on Saturday. On Monday afternoon, the Blue Devils battled the Green Dragons in Hamden and held a 4-3 lead but Hamden rallied for two runs in the bottom of sixth inning to defeat the Westies, 5-4.
The Westies continued to play better baseball and held a lead against the Branford Hornets before allowing another game to slip away with a Hornet rally in the seventh inning to defeat the Blue Devils 7-6. Dom Cambino and Diego Mahecha each had two hits to lead the Westies while Chris Cavallaro knocked in two RBIs in the loss.
On Saturday afternoon, the Blue Devils hosted the Harding Presidents. The Westies scored three runs in the first inning, added five more in the fourth inning and then tacked on four more in the fifth inning to leave the Presidents on the field with a mercy-rule ended 12-2 victory. JC Contreras had two hits and five RBIs to lead the Westies, while Dom Cambino had two hits and Mike Vitolo had two hits and pitched a complete game to pick up the win on the mound. Chris Cavallaro also had a hit and two RBIs.
This week, the boys had road games at Hand of Madison on Monday and Guilford on Wednesday before they finish the week hosting O’Brien Tech on Friday at 6:30.
The boys lacrosse team opened last week with an 8-2 victory over the Wilbur Cross Governors on Monday evening at Ken Strong Stadium. Niko Kyle led the Westies with two goals while Logan Cole, Nick Massaro, Rich Wadeka, Dillon Lenihan, Charlie Miller and Steve Moran all added tallies in the win. Kevin Moriarty made 15 saves between the pipes to preserve the victory.
On Wednesday, the Blue Devils fell 15-6 to the Lyman Hall Trojans. Nick Massaro led the Westies with three goals, while Niko Kyle added two goals in the loss. Kevin Moriarty stopped 24 Trojan shots.
On Friday evening, the boys were locked in a battle with the Bunnell Bulldogs. The Bulldogs opened the scoring 1:14 into the game but the Westies responded when Tyler Moscato scored 1:35 later to knot the game at 1-1. Bunnell scored the next two goals but, Niko Kyle got the Blue Devils to within 3-2 with a goal with 58.6 seconds left in the half. Unfortunately for the boys, the Bulldogs outscored the Westies, 7-3, in the second half to grab a 10-5 win. Niko Kyle and Ed Leavitt each had two goals while Nick Massaro had four assists to lead West Haven. Kevin Moriarty had 24 saves in goal for the Blue Devils.
This week, the Westies traveled to Sheehan on Wednesday and head out again on Friday for a game at Windsor on Saturday at noon.
The girls lacrosse team traveled to Milford to face the Lauralton Hall Crusaders on Monday afternoon. The Crusaders jumped out to a 9-2 halftime lead and proceeded to beat the Blue Devils 13-3. Keegan Riccio, Emily Mendes and Amani Cayo all picked up goals for the Westies while Nicole Gaston made 18 saves in goal for West Haven.
On Tuesday, the Westies suffered a 15-4 loss to the North Haven Indians at Ken Strong Stadium. The Indians built a 9-1 halftime lead and never looked back. Emily Mendes led the Blue Devils with two goals while Madisyn Crotta had a goal and an assist and Mackenzie Holy scored a goal. Nicole Gaston made three saves in goal for the Westies.
This week, the girls hosted Mercy on Monday, traveled to Wallingford to take on the Lyman Hall Trojans on Tuesday and finish the week hosting the Hamden Green Dragons on Thursday evening at 7.
The boys tennis team defeated the Sheehan Titans, 7-0, on Monday afternoon at the Painter Park Courts. James Delgado swept his match, 6-0, 6-0, as did second-seeded Joseph Delgado. Kent Dimaisip won, 6-1, 6-1, and Zach Kerzner was victorious, 6-0, 6-0, in singles play. While in doubles action, Julian Thomas/Jeremy Tammaro won, 6-1, 3-6, 10-6, Ehsan Sumra/Corey Smith won, 6-0, 6-2 and Nash Noble/Jason Ramirez won 6-1, 6-1.
On Thursday afternoon, the boys swept another match to improve to 4-3 with a 7-0 whitewash of the Hamden Green Dragons. In singles action, James Delgado won 7-5, 6-2, Joseph Delgado won, 6-3, 6-1, Kent Dimaisip was victorious, 6-1, 4-6, 10-5, and Zach Kerzner won by default. In doubles, Julian Thomas/Jeremy Tammaro won, 6-0, 6-2, Corey Smith/Ehsan Sumra won 6-1, 6-1, and Nash Noble/Riyad Al-Bakri won 6-3, 6-1.
The Westies finished the week with a trip to Wallingford to face Lyman Hall on Saturday morning. Singles victories by James and Joseph Delgado along with Kent Dimaisip and Zach Kerzner allowed the Blue Devils to win 5-2 over the Trojans. The doubles pair of Julian Thomas and Corey Smith were also victorious in their match 6-4, 6-3.
This week, the boys hosted Cheshire on Wednesday and then head out on the road for matches with Cross on Thursday at 3:45 and at Fairfield Prep on Friday at 3:45.
The girls tennis team traveled to Wallingford to open its week at Sheehan on Monday and only managed to get one victory in a 6-1 loss to the Titans. Top-seeded Jovanna Gaetano won her match, 6-4, 6-3.
On Tuesday, the Westies returned to Wallingford and fell 5-2 to the Lyman Hall Trojans. Jovanna Gaetano was victorious, 6-0, 6-0, and Skylar Serenson won, 6-2, 6-0. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils lost their other, two singles matches and were swept in doubles play.
On Thursday afternoon, West Haven suffered a similar fate with a 5-2 loss to the Mercy Tigers at the Painter Park Courts. Jovanna Gaetano and Skylar Serenson were the bright spots again for the Westies with Gaetano winning, 6-0, 6-1 and Serenson winning, 6-4, 6-3.
This week, the girls traveled to Sacred Heart Academy on Monday, hosted Cheshire on Tuesday, traveled to East Haven on Wednesday and finish their busy week hosting the Platt Tech Panthers on Friday at 3:45.
