West Haven High School senior captain Noelle Lawrence continues to make history for the Blue Devils. Wearing jersey number 23, the senior guard became just the eighth player in girls basketball history to reach 1,000 career points during a 72-62 win over Daniel Hand. Lawrence delivered a standout performance in the milestone game with 30 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists to help lead West Haven to the victory.
The Blue Devils currently hold a 7-3 record and Lawrence’s leadership has been a steady presence throughout the season. Her 1,000th point is the result of four years of dedication and commitment to the program.
“This milestone means a lot to me,” Lawrence said. “I’ve worked really hard over the last four years and set a goal for myself to try and achieve this, so it is a proud moment for sure.”
Lawrence credits her coaches and teammates for putting her in the best position to succeed. “My coaches have given me so much confidence in myself over the years and have always encouraged and believed in me,” she said. “Coach Mo has never held me back from being a scorer and has pushed me to be the best player that I can be. My teammates are the best. They have been so supportive of me and have really helped me both on and off the court. They are my best friends and it’s just so fun being out there playing with them.”
Head coach Jess Moriarty has watched Lawrence grow into a confident leader over her four seasons.
“I can’t say enough about Noelle’s growth over the last four years,” Moriarty said. “She came in as a reserved kid, lacking confidence, yet had all the talent in the world. Watching her personality and confidence develop over the years has been the most rewarding. She is a tremendous basketball player, but she is an even better person and it has been an absolute joy to coach her.”
Lawrence’s achievement also reflects the consistency of the program.
“Scoring 1,000 points is an amazing accomplishment,” Moriarty said. “It speaks to her work ethic, commitment, and consistency over multiple seasons. It also reflects what we’re building as a program and creating a culture where players grow year after year.”
Co Athletic Directors Joe Morrell and Mike Anq also praised Lawrence’s impact on the program.
“Noelle is a good leader and the other players on the team look up to her as well as the younger kids that come to the games and watch her,” they said. “She is what West Haven High School girls basketball should be all about. Well deserved honor and congratulations to her.”
Lawrence is committed to continue her basketball career at Springfield College.
For younger players hoping to follow in her footsteps, Lawrence keeps her message simple.
“Never settle or get too comfortable,” she said. “There is always someone out there working just as hard. Set goals for yourself and don’t quit,” she said.
