A huge win for ND wrestling, swimming takes down Foran, hoops splits a pair of games, two indoor track athletes fare well at SCC Meet and hockey suffers heartbreaking loss on the ND scene this past week
Wrestling — Connor Massey became the second Notre Dame wrestler in school history to win an individual championship when he defeated Fairfield Prep’s Dean Tsiranides in the 145-pound division by a 6-4 decision. Massey joins Camilo Vanegas as individual SCC champion. Vanegas brought distinction to the Notre Dame wrestling scene when he captured the Green Knight’s first SCC title by pinning Fairfield Prep’s Nick Crowle in February of 2014. Notre Dame placed 11th in the team competition.
Indoor Track — Nick Petruzzelli and Warren Murphy earned all nine Notre Dame points as the Green Knights indoor track team placed 19th at the CIAC Class L Championship Meet on Thursday, Feb. 8, at the New Haven Athletic Center. Petruzzelli earned eight points for placing second in the pole vault. He cleared 13-0 to take second place behind South Windsor’s Patrick Bell. Petruzzelli also competed in the high jump clearing 5-6 to place 15th. Murphy took sixth in the 300-meter dash to earn the Green Knights other point.
Basketball — The basketball split the week to run its record to 13-6. After beating East Haven, 64-46, on Tuesday, Feb. 6, the Green Knights saw its furious comeback fall short in a 61-57 loss to 9th-ranked Wilbur Cross on Friday, February 9. Trailing by 11 in the fourth quarter against the Governors, Connor Raines went on a personal 10-point run to give ND a lead only to see Cross prevail. Against East Haven, Michael Brooks scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half, finishing his night with an alleyoop dunk, as the Green Knights turned a close game at half (25-22 lead) into a comfortable win.
Swimming — Swimming split two contests beating Foran on Tuesday and losing to Fairfield Prep on Thursday. Against the Lions on February 6, Notre Dame won seven of the 12 events with North Hansen and Cameron Jurzyk winning multiple events. Hansen then won two more events in the Green Knights loss 99-76 loss to the Jesuits on Thursday, Feb. 8.
Hockey — Hockey’s lone game of the week came on Sunday due to Mother Nature. Xavier came to town for the second day in a row and rallied for a 6-5 OT win. Notre Dame led, 3-2, after the first period then Chris Hibson added a pair of second-period goals and the Green Knights led, 5-2. However, Xavier scored three in the third and won it on a Chase Maxwell OT goal. Notre Dame falls to 9-6 with the loss.
