Quick thinking saves cafeteria worker

At West Haven High School, what could have been a frightening moment turned into a powerful example of care, composure, and community. During lunch earlier this week, Deanna Rozmus, a production worker, began choking. Without hesitation, Gina Raucci, a cook at the school, sprang into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver, helping Deanna breathe again and preventing what could have been a much more serious situation.

Both employees are doing well, and their actions highlight the strong sense of teamwork that defines the West Haven Public Schools family. Superintendent Neil Cavallaro visited WHHS today to personally thank Gina for her quick thinking and present her with flowers, while also checking in on Deanna and presenting her with flowers as a gesture of care and support.

Reflecting on the moment, Gina said, “Oh my god, is she choking? Is she okay? Is she breathing? I have to help her! It happened so fast, you don’t really process it—I just snapped into action.” She added that keeping a clear head was essential: “I focused on helping her and immediately started the Heimlich. Thank God I learned it as an employee of the school. We are trained by the nurse yearly. I would tell others to stay composed and follow the steps if they were trained.”

Deanna expressed deep gratitude for Gina’s quick response. “I’d like to thank her from the bottom of my heart. I’m so thankful that she saved my life! We are forever bonded! I would also tell others to try to remain composed and get someone’s attention, even though it is easier said than done in the moment,” she said. She also joked, “Well, for starters, I’m a little nervous eating solid food since then!” Rushing through meals is something we all do at times without thinking, and this moment shows how even taking a small bit of extra time can make a big difference.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of training, quick thinking, and teamwork—and highlights the extraordinary care and dedication of the West Haven High School staff.
