The 42nd Annual Rotary Club of West Haven Scholar-Athlete Recognition Ceremony took place Wednesday, April 24, in the West Haven High School Auditorium.
In total, 70 students were recognized as scholar-athletes. To be selected for the award, a student must be a member of the junior class, maintain a 3.4 grade point average, and participate on a varsity team in one or more sports.
In addition to the scholar-athlete awards, Olivia McDonnell (softball) was honored with the Robert “Bob” Greenwood “Service Above Self” Award and Jason Alling (boys lacrosse) received the Vincent “Vin” DiLauro “Passion” Award. Both awards are presented annually to a senior athlete at WHHS.
Recipients of the Robert “Bob” Greenwood “Service Above Self” Award emulate the best of Bob Greenwood, who had a lifelong love of sports, the West Haven community, and WHHS. In addition to the student’s athletic contributions, recipients are also dedicated volunteers who are devoted to giving back to their schools and community. Above all, they are kind and compassionate individuals who always give their best to make the world a better place for others.
Recipients of the Vincent “Vin” DiLauro “Passion” Award emulate the spirit of Vin DiLauro, the eternal optimist who enjoyed and appreciated every moment of life. While the passion of the student award-winner may be demonstrated in their athletic contributions, it must also be found in their unwavering commitment to their school and the greater community.
Carrie Malangone, the President of the Rotary Club of West Haven, served as the Mistress of Ceremonies. Students Sarah Davey and Zoe Powell recited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang the National Anthem, respectively, while Steven R. Mullins read the Invocation. Co-Athletic Director Mike Anquillare presented the awards, and Mark Consorte, a history teacher at WHHS, was selected as the guest speaker.
