The West Haven/Sacred Heart Academy girls hockey team rebounded nicely from a couple of tough losses the previous week with two, big wins last week. On Tuesday evening, the Westie Sharks got two goals from sophomore Taylor Nowak and stellar goaltending from Tatum Courtmanche in a 2-0 win over Hand/Coginchaug/Old Lyme. Nowak returning after missing the game against Hall/Conard was put on defense to bolster the back line with the absence of Brooke McNabola. That wasn’t a problem for Nowak, who scored at 2:30 of the first period when she took a pass from C.C. Condon and rifled a shot from the slot past the Tigers’ goaltender for a 1-0 lead. Nowak made it 2-0 with 4:55 left in the second period, when on the power play, she took a tough angle shot that found the short side for the only offense the girls would need.
On Friday afternoon, the Westie Sharks traveled to Shelton to face Masuk/Barlow/Newtown/Oxford/Bethel. The girls jumped on Masuk for three goals in the first period on the way to a 6-0 shutout victory. Shannon Siclari scored just 51 seconds into the game, assisted by Mia Celentano then the Westie Sharks got unassisted goals from Taylor Nowak at 7:57 and Veronica Lynn at 11:45 to put the girls up 3-0.
The Westie Sharks would add three, more goals in the third period. Grace Plunkett scored at 2:52 of the period assisted by Celentano, Megan Froehlich scored 56 seconds later unassisted and Makenna White added a goal at 10:28, assisted by Siclari and Nowak for the 6-0 final. Kyleen Crowe made three saves to record the shutout between the pipes.
This week, the girls faced Branford/East Haven/North Branford on Wednesday and host the Notre Dame of Fairfield Lancers on Saturday at 3.
The West Haven boys basketball team got a couple of big wins last week to improve its playoff chances before falling to Notre Dame. On Monday night, the Blue Devils defeated the Branford Hornets, 78-64, to get their fifth win and then were victorious over the Foran Lions 48-37 on Wednesday night in Milford. The Westies shut down the Lions’ offense in the first half and got 12 points each from Marquel Bookert and Josiah Steinman while Jamal Pate picked up 10 points in the win.
On Friday evening the Blue Devils took on cross-town rival Notre Dame and after falling behind early were not able to recover in a 74-57 loss. Josh Moncrieffe led the Westies with 20 points, Josiah Steinman had 13 points and Marquel Bookert added 12 points in the loss.
This week, the boys hosted Jonathan Law on Tuesday and finish the week hosting the Career Panthers on Friday at 7.
The girls basketball team lost to the Branford Hornets, 55-41, on Monday evening with Ny’Aire Serrano leading the way with 10 points. Natalia Frazier picked up nine points and Amanda Carr added seven points in the loss.
On Friday evening, the Blue Devils hosted the Shelton Gaels. The girls kept things close in the first quarter, trailing only 16-14 after one. Unfortunately for the Westies, the Gaels extended the lead to 31-19 by halftime before cruising to a 54-34 victory. Amanda Carr and Natalia Frazier each had nine points while Ebonie Jones added eight points in the loss.
This week, the Blue Devils traveled to Sacred Heart on Monday, went to Sheehan on Tuesday and travel to Cheshire on Friday at 7.
The boys hockey team hosted cross-town rival Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon at the Bennett Rink. Before the game, the teams paid tribute to first responders in their annual Police and Fire Appreciation game and West Haven recognized the 1950-51 State Championship team.
Once the game started it was all Green Knights. Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead with 6:45 left in the first period, then added goals 52 seconds into the second period and with 6:14 left in the period to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Blue Devils got on the board with 7.1 seconds left in the second period when Niko Kyle scored off a faceoff, firing the puck under the crossbar to cut the lead to 3-1. The Knights would ice the game with a goal in the third period for the 4-1 final. Logan Cole stood on his head, making 52 saves between the pipes to keep the Westies in the game.
This week, the Blue Devils hosted North Rockland, NY on Wednesday and host the Xavier Falcons on Saturday at 1.
The West Haven/Platt Tech boys swim team picked up another win this week with a 91-85 victory over the Foran Lions in Milford on Tuesday. Jacob Eairheart won the 200 individual medley, Luis Lopez took the 100 breaststroke and the 200 freestyle relay team of Heli Estrada, Julian Thomas, Chris Olsen and Chris D’Inzio were victorious.
On Friday evening, the Westies were defeated by the Amity Spartans, 87-72. The Blue Devils picked up victories from Luis Lopez in the 500 freestyle, Bryan Barrington in the 100 backstroke, Chris D’Inzio in the 100 breaststroke in individual races. The boys also got wins from the 200 freestyle relay team of Heli Estrada, Chris Olsen, Tabish Butt and Julian Thomas and the 400 freestyle relay team of Isaac Gorske, Shane Taulty, Luis Lopez and Chris D’Inzio.
This week, the Westies head to Milford on Friday for a meet with Jonathan Law at 4.
