Seaview Hotel
One of the earliest attractions to the resort area that became Savin Rock was the Seaview Hotel. This postcard, dating from the turn of the 20th century shows the picturesque setting that was part of its charm. Well healed patrons strolled along the shore, and ate at some of the fine restaurants, including Wilcox’s Pier.
Schools set to open for new term, Aug. 28
For the first time in 114 years, Washington School will not welcome a new class of students. The iconic building is scheduled for demolition later this year to make way for a new building.

DPW employees volunteer
West Haven Department of Public Works administrative clerk Diane Ascenzia, left, and administrative secretary Kara Comfort volunteer at the city’s designated Hometown Day at HazWaste Central in New Haven on Saturday.
Ascenzia and Comfort gathered data and distributed paperwork from 8 a.m.-noon at the Long Wharf center, which collects and disposes of household hazardous waste, including oil paints, gardening products, swimming pool chemicals, antifreeze, batteries, waste oil and small propane cylinders.
HazWaste is in the parking lot of the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority at 90 Sargent Drive, just off Interstate 95’s Exit 46.
The Municipal Planning Committee, composed of representatives from 16 area cities and towns, oversees HazWaste as part of each community’s Hometown Day.
Drivers can drop off hazardous waste for free on Saturday mornings from mid-May through October.

Noreen Adams, the reigning Ms. Senior World Connecticut, was chosend appear in the July issue of Crowns Magaizine’s Red, White, Blue feature. The photo was taken at an event at the West Haven, Veterans Museum. She has become a voice for senior advocacy in her position. Anyone wishing to support her platform by downloading an issue or an issue of the magazine can contact her at: [email protected]. She does appearances and fundraisers at no fee in order to advocate for seniors.

As many Westies are aware, Zarnowski Power Equipment, located at 301 Savin Ave, is a repair shop that services lawn mowers, snowblowers, and other power tools and sells used equipment.

So long!
Board President Katie Farrell and West Haven Community House Executive Director Amy Guay-Macfarlane said goodbye to long-time board member Audrey Jefferson, whose term has ended. Jefferson, a West Haven Police Officer, was called, “a wonderful asset and advocate for us and has been a great supporter of our events and fundraising efforts,” by Guay-Macfarlane. She has agreed to help with the agency’s fundraising in the future as a non-board member.

The West Haven Community House added two named funds to its endowment at their annual meeting in June. Ellen Torello, is presented with a plaque by WHCH Board President Katie Farrell and Past President Mary Jane Morrissey for the Torello-Scannell Fund named for her late husband Thomas Torello, Rotarian and owner of Torello Tire and her late father Edward Scannell, a WHCH board member and treasurer.

The other named fund was created by former Librarian Connie Sacco, in honor of her late brother, Louis Sacco, Jr and her late sister Theresa Monaco. Accepting on her behalf is current Library Executive Director Coleen Bailie.
