St. Lawrence School recently celebrated its Students of the Month for November, 2018 in a ceremony held at the school. The students were honored for their academics and achievements in the classroom. Each student was awarded a pin and certificate, and they, along with their parents, were invited to have breakfast with the Pastor, the Rev. Jose Mercado and Principal Paul DeFonzo. The West Haven/Sacred Heart Sharks came to play last season, recording the best record in the history of the program. Last year the team knotched 18 wins before being ousted from the state tournament by New Canaan in the quarterfinals of the state tournament. The team is looking to prove it was no fluke in 2017-1918, and is looking forward to the beginning of the new hockey season.

The events happened on the night before Thanksgiving as the young man headed home for the holiday.

They painted their own unique rocks, to add to the rock garden being created on the university grounds. Post University students, athletes and faculty joined the children in this community event. Each child was given a copy of the book to bring home. The children were invited to eat their lunch in the campus dining hall, amongst the college students, before returning back to the preschool for their afternoon naps! It was a unique experience for all. The event was run by the Child Studies department at the university. Marie Russell, chairman of the Child Studies program, is a board member at the Child Development Center.

The baskets came with a grocery gift card. Last week, WHHS Social Studies Department Chairman Mark Consorte, along with WHHS students Dan Gallipoli and Lauren Panza, took part in a program at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY. The program was entitled “Ordinary Americans”, and it commemorated the 75th anniversary of the sinking of the HMT Rohna by a German guided missile on Nov. 26, 1943, in which 1,015 U.S. troops were lost. Gallipoli as “Uncle Bill”, and Panza as “Aunt Mae,” read real wartime letters from Lt. William Brown and his wife Mae Brown. Lt. Brown survived the Rohna sinking, and he was the uncle of Catherine Ladnier of Greenwich. Ladnier has written a play entitled “Apron Strings,” a portrayal of wartime family life through real letters, some of which were read by the students.

The holidays came early to Carrigan Intermediate School on Nov. 14 as the Tetlow Street school welcomed more than 500 books collected by the Core Training Academy of Orange. The books were donated by families and players of the Connecticut Gators. The 2019 games are June 5-10 in Anchorage, Alaska. Registration is Feb. 25-March 8.

West Haven Professional Firefighters Local 1198 donated and delivered 100 turkeys to the West Haven Emergency Assistance Taskforce (WHEAT) headquarters on Washington Avenue to help fulfill its quota of Thanksgiving baskets. The turkey purchase, which totaled just over $2200, was made possible due to the generous donations collected from various Toy Drive events, which will be running through December.

Former Mayor Edward O’Brien and Mayor Nancy Rossi called a truce to their long-standing feud when the former chief executive was awarded the Irishman of the Year award by the West Haven Elks Lodge in March. That feud may be rekindled as O’Brien is evaluating his chances for another run at City Hall.

Sabo on Nov. 15 at City Hall. The money was raised at the annual golf tournament in October. The other organizers were co-chairman Art Gilbert, Kaci Fabish, Jo-Anne Hugendubel-Case, Sue LePre and Mary Price. Since its inception in 2000, the program has collected hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research and education.

The story of the first Thanksgiving has been the subject of many artists’ renderings. Thankful for surviving a year in the New World, and happy the crops were so successful, prayer and feasting were ordered.

Pamela Bellmore Gardner, the beloved principal at West Haven High School, passed away Thursday morning at the age of 49. She had been battling a rare form of cancer.

DJ Bill Murray and Cowboy Ron Moon help the “Sunday, Funday” group each week from 4-8 p.m. The group follows a long tradition of dancing at the Capt. Tony Walk and the dance floor at Old Grove Park. Murray provides the music, while Moon helps with the line dancing. Part of the huge following mugged it up for the camera on the last night of the year. The group also has other DJs. Wednesday is Steve Wallace DJ Marcus, Thursday is DJ Donny and Saturday is DJ Dan Chudoba. He is the Senior DJ at the beach, loggin in more than 20 years. He also does “Christmas in August” A Fundraiser all proceeds raised go to Children’s Hospital. Everything is strictly volunteer and has been a tradition during the warm-weather months.

WHHS’s Julia Walker and Joseph Delgado were recently named Scholar-Athletes by the Southern Connecticut Conference. Walker is the captain of the soccer team and a member of the lacrosse team. She has a 4.4 GPA and is ranked 8th in the class. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the Smith College Book Award recipient. Delgado is captain of the tennis team. He has a 4.3 GPA and is ranked 10th in the class is p resident of the National Honor Society and the Science Club Award winner. Both student athletes plan on attending the University of Connecticut.

uring a news conference Monday at the Savin Rock gazebo, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Mayor Nancy R. Rossi announced a new package of funding for West Haven’s beaches in the recently approved America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018, including “$3 million to $7 million” in federal aid for the city’s coastline. Joining them is Rossi’s executive assistant, Lou Esposito.

Students in the West Haven Community House Head Start Program enjoy the early fall warmer weather we had last week, taking timeout to climb the monkey bars. Reality set in over the weekend as more October-like temperatures came into the area. Leaves are beginning to fall, and coats and jackets are the order of the day.

“Crossing the West River” is a painting in the CampbellAvenue Post Office that was part of an NRA project during the Great Depression. It shows settlers moving from New Haven into “West Farms,” which would eventally become West Haven.

West Haven High School Nursing Assistant Students recently heard Matt Pilgrim) speak on muscle and bone health, osteoporosis, and nutrition for patients. Pilgrim, a dietetic intern from the University of New Haven, is currently at WHHS in the Dietary Department under the supervision of Meg Kingston. Besides guest speaking, he has been working on learning all aspects of the Food Service Department, including school nutrition, USDA guidelines, purchasing, food service management and teaching nutrition.
