Michelle Carmody is an advocate for reading in the city. She currently stewards her own Little Free Library and has worked closely with schools and libraries to make access to books. She accepts donations and regularly stocks all of the LFL's in town and has made flyers for schools to hand out that maps them all out. To celebrate the one-year anniversary of her Little Free Library, there will be a book exchange event on Alexander Drive on July 13 from 1-3 p.m. (rain date July 14). It will feature raffle prizes (those who donate books received raffle tickets), activities for kids, and a special appearance from the West Haven Bookmobile. She is shown with daughter, Cora.

Grammy winner Zuraitis honored by city

“Bowlin’” Bob Nugent, the owner of Woodlawn Duckpin Bowling Alley at 240 Platt Ave., center, receives the “Way to Go!” award from West Haven’s Youth and Family Services and Interagency Network for Children on June 26. WHINC Parent Support Group members and families presented the framed award to Nugent for “providing duckpin bowling fun to families of children, youth and young adults with disabilities. Congratulations on your 20th anniversary serving West Haven.” The presentation took place during a pizza party marking the culmination of WHINC’s five-week duckpin bowling league, which consisted of 14 bowlers ages 9-13. The Way to Go program recognizes those who go above and beyond to offer services and resources.
Open-air service
The Rev. Thomas C. Jackson, Vicar of the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit celebrated Mass at the parish's annual open-air mass at Bradley Point on June 23, assisted by Eucharistic Minister Steven R. Mullins. During the liturgy prayers were said for the recovery of the twin toddlers that were nearly drowned by their father in Dawson Beach early the previous day, as well as the first responders involved in their rescue.

The First Congregational Church of West Haven and the Rev. Vance Taylor, standing in for church Pastor the Rev. Carl Howard welcomed the brothers of Annawon Lodge 115, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of West Haven on Sunday, June 23 as the Masons celebrated the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The official Feast Day is June 24. Freemasonry venerates two saints, Saint John the Baptist and Saint John the Evangelist, whose feast day is Dec. 27. They are collectively known as "The Holy Saints John of Jerusalem.
