The civic group West Haven United hosted Halloween on the Green, Saturday, with hundreds of families attending the all-day event. Besides the hundreds of costumed youngsters and teens, dance teams performed, and people were entertained with a spooky bounce pit and other attractions.

Montagna calls it a career
Nancy R. Rossi on Oct. 20 congratulates retiring Park Maintenance Superintendent Joseph “Joe” Montagna on 52 years of “dedicated service” to the departments of Public Works and Park Maintenance. During a morning reception attended by Montagna’s co-workers at the Park Maintenance Department at 91 Bull Hill Lane, Rossi presented him with a mayoral citation for his “hardworking spirit” and “remarkable career in public service.” Reading the citation, Rossi said, “Your wholehearted devotion to maintain our park system has placed our parks among the fi nest in Connecticut.” Montagna was hired in 1971 under the administration of then-Republican Mayor Alexander F. Zarnowski.

Rell endorses Mullins
Former Connecticut Republican Governor M. Jodi Rell has endorsed write-in candidate for Mayor Steven R. Mullins. Rell served as governor from 2004 until 2011. Earlier this month, Mullins, a Republican and member of the West Haven Republican Town Committee was endorsed by former Waterbury Democrat Mayor Michael Jarjura at a press conference on the steps of City Hall. Jarjura was also elected Mayor as a write-in candidate in 2005.
Dream Center opens
The Dream Center of West Haven had its Grand Opening celebration this past Saturday. It is located at the West Haven Masonic Building, Annawon Lodge, 263 Center St. The ceremonial ribbon cutting was held and was attended by over 100 people, including inter-denominational clergy, federal, state and local officials and Annawon Lodge members. The Dream Center, which is part of the ministry of West Haven’s Vertical Church, has a goal to restore hope in the West Haven community. They help serve children, families, seniors, veterans, the homeless and those with disabilities. The center focuses on reconnecting people to God and supporting services that address immediate and long term in areas such as hunger, clothing, job skills and employment search.

St. Lawrence Principal Frank Arnone recognized the students of the month at a recognition Breakfast. Students are selected based on their personal and academic success.

West Haven’s senior volleyball players were honored last week and took the traditional photo with family, coaches and friends. The Lady Devils had a successful night on the court as well, blanking Lyman Hall, 3-0.
