‘Prevention’ theme of Fire ExpoWest Shore Fire Department Fire Marshal Keith T. Flood demonstrates a home fire sprinkler during a live burn at the third annual West Haven Fire, Emergency Management, 911 ERS, Police & Health Expo in Old Grove Park on Oct. 8. The side-by-side burn consisted of two 8-by-8-foot cells, one with a sprinkler and one without. The burn showed the fire’s destruction on a structure without a sprinkler, compared with minimal damage to a structure with a sprinkler. The demonstration was sponsored by the Connecticut Fire Sprinkler Coalition to show the importance of home sprinklers, which can save lives and reduce property damage.

Wins poetry contestSofie Burns, a 4th-grade student at Pagels Elementary School, was one of only 10 students across the country to win an Amazon Gift Card in the 27th Annual National Student Poetry Contest hosted by the America Library of Poetry. “When I found out she had won, I was absolutely thrilled for her because she’s an exceptionally talented young writer who has the tenacity and enthusiasm to persevere,” said Sofie’s 3rd-grade teacher Lisa Biagetti, who helped her submit the poem in the spring. Sofie’s poem, a Haiku about nature, is titled “Nature’s Beauty” and it will be published in December in a book of student poems. She was very excited to learn that she had won and is still undecided on what she will spend the Amazon gift card on.

Rossi at the city’s 24th annual Italian Heritage Celebration in the Harriet C. North Community Room of City Hall on Oct. 6.
