Fireworks highlight city’s celebration of Labor Day

Celebrating Ukrainian Independence
On Aug. 24 Ukraine marked its 31st anniversary of renewed independence as a free and democratic state. In observance of this, West Haven lit its new Cove River Bridge in yellow and blue, the colors of the natin’s fl ag, and declared that day Ukrainian Independence Day. Support for the nation in its six-month war with Russia has been strong in the city.

Senior Center painter honors master
West Haven Senior Center member David Dulko shows his “Mona Lisa” oil painting at the Noble Street center Aug. 25. Dulko, who takes the center’s watercolor class taught by MaryLou Horan, worked on the portrait for more than a week at his Smith Street home, where he spent several hours a day painting the faintly smiling woman, a famous portrait by Leonardo da Vinci.
Vacation’s end!
Scenes like this one at Carrigan were repeated at all schools in the West Haven system, Monday, as the summer vacation ended and the new school year began. Sixth graders at Carrigan flooded the entrance plaza, accompanied by parents and siblings.

Welcome back!
Schools all over the city welcomed back their students with signs and posters as the summer vacation came to an end and the 2022-23 academic year began. All of the city’s elementary, middle and West Haven High School opened to full-day sessions, getting the student body right into the swing of things.

The Gray Team, the champions of the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Girls Summer Fun Basketball League, show their trophies at the Veterans Memorial Park courts on Bull Hill Lane on Aug. 22.
