Students, faculty, and staff of the newly minted Washington School take a commemorative group photo outside the building on the first day of school, Aug. 27. The official opening of the school was the week before with a gala celebration and tour, which included city, state, and school officials. The opening was hailed as being on time and under budget as well as offering amenities students will enjoy during the coming years.

The West Haven Retired Teachers Association (WHRTA) recently celebrated the retirements of President and Co-President Carolyn Gagliardi and Janice Frank at Stappa Winery, Orange. The ladies have given many years of dedicated service to WHRTA and to the West Haven school system. Taking their slots are Alicia Glagowski as President and Patti Fusco as Vice-President. WHRTA raises money for scholarships for deserving WHHS seniors who will enter the education field.

From left, Mayor Dorinda Borer reads a proclamation to the wife and daughters of the late city employee Doug Kidd, declaring Aug. 22 as “Doug Kidd Day.” Joined by many of Kidd’s colleagues and friends, Borer presented the proclamation to his wife, Karen, and his daughters, Kristen and Shelby, during a moving celebration of life at the Prospect Beach Fish & Game Club, “the place he so cherished,” the mayor said.

First National stood next door to what is now a pharmacy on the east corner of Campbell near Brown Street. It was eventually turned into a showroom for a car dealership before being razed. An empty space is there now.

The American Buckle Co. stood just south of First National and was one of the two buckle firms that made the city the buckle capital of the world.

Children at the West Haven Child Development Center, Inc., are learning new playground skills, while making new friends as the program year begins for the 49th year of service to the community.

During a pit stop at West Haven’s Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Silver discussed the benefits and misconceptions of vaccinations, and Walsh stressed the importance of blood pressure screenings, diet and exercise.

Recently the West Haven Historical Society and the West Haven Rotary Club placed a historic plaque on the historically significant residence at 2 Parkridge Road.
