
The West Haven boys basketball team won its eighth straight contest and improved to 10-1 on the season with a 63-56 victory over Hillhouse in New Haven.
Trailing by five points after one quarter and 31-28 at the half, West Haven used a 21-7 third quarter run to defeat the Academics.
Jordan Sirabionian led all scorers with 20 points for the Westies. Aaron Johnson added 12 points, and K’naan Morris scored 10. The Westies shot 80% (16-of-20) from the free throw line.
Defense has been the staple for the West Haven boys basketball team thus far this season. That staple continued in a dominant 83-36 victory over Foran.
The Westies held Foran to just one first quarter field goal in building an 18-3 lead, before scoring the first 17 points of the second quarter to take a 39-8 halftime lead. Foran did not record its first field goal in the second quarter until the final three minutes when the Westies were holding a 35-3 lead.
Johnson led all scorers with 31 points, including 12 in the first half and 12 more in the third quarter. Sirabionian scored 15 points, while Ricardo Harris and Matt Morgan each scored eight points.
Johnson, Harris, and Morris each drained a pair of 3-pointers in the win. The victory was West Haven’s ninth in a row and helped the team improve to 11-1.


West Haven improved to 13-1 with a 60-45 victory at Shelton. The Westies led by seven after one quarter and increased the margin to 35-23 at the half.
Leading by eight, the West Haven defense held Shelton to five points in the fourth quarter to win its tenth consecutive contest.
Johnson led the Westies with 19 points, Sirabionian scored 14, and Morris added 10 for West Haven.
The West Haven girls basketball team is on a roll. Scoring the first 17 points of the game, West Haven cruised to a 65-28 victory at East Haven.
The win was West Haven’s eighth in a row, and helped the Westies improve to 9-3 on the year. Tiranke Keita led the way with 20 points, Fatoumata Keita had 16 points, and Noelle Lawrence scored 14 points.


The Westies saw their eight-game winning streak snapped and fell to 9-4 with a 56-45 loss at Hamden. Lawrence led the Westies with 16 points.
West Haven got back on the winning track with a 62-50 victory at Lyman Hall. Lawrence led the way with 16 points, Fatoumata Keita had 14 points, Tiranke Keita had 12 points, and Perez Rosario added 10 points in a balanced attack.
After posting two straight victories, the West Haven boys hockey team was looking to extend the streak. The task would be a tough one against undefeated East Haven.
Unable to generate any offense, West Haven saw its winning streak stopped with a 3-0 home loss.
Kai Lupa made 32 saves for West Haven, including 11 in each of the first two periods.
The Westies returned to action against rival Hamden. After being shutout against East Haven, West Haven got on the board first, but it was not enough in a 3-1 loss to the Green Dragons.
With its second straight loss, West Haven fell to 3-7 on the year.
Leo Mazuroski gave West Haven a 1-0 lead after the first period, but the Westies never found the back of the net again. Hamden evened the score in the second period, took the lead early in the third, then added an empty net goal late in the game to seal the win over West Haven.


The Westies lost their third straight game and fell to 3-8 with a 2-1 overtime loss against Watertown-Pomperaug.
After a scoreless first period, West Haven had a golden opportunity to strike first, but a shot from the slot by Sean Bush was denied with 6:13 remaining in the middle period. The Westies got on the board less than 30 seconds later when Luca DiLegge came down the right wing and scored a back-handed short-handed goal for a 1-0 lead.
The lead held until Watertown scored late in the third period to force overtime, then topped the Westies 2:44 into overtime.
The West Haven boys hockey team was looking to get back on the winning track. After three straight losses, things did not start as the Westies would have liked.
Spotting New Milford a 1-0 lead, West Haven scored the next four goals, on its way to a 4-1 victory. With the win, West Haven improved to 4-8 on the year.
Kai Lupa made 15 saves in the win as West Haven held a 56-16 shot advantage. Connor Moriarty, Jack Wellins, Bush and DiLegge each finished with a goal and an assist in the win.
Despite holding a 20-5 shot advantage in the first period, the Westies trailed 1-0. Moriarty tied the game 4:53 into the second period off assists from Wellins and Tyler McColgan, before Wellins gave the Westies the lead for good 1:41 later off assists from Moriarty and DiLegge.
West Haven iced the game in the third period with a pair of goals. DiLegge scored off an assist from Bush 1:59 in, and Bush scored the final goal off an assist from Kyle Guarino with 6:09 left.
Needing wins to qualify for the state tournament, West Haven took a small step in a 3-3 tie with Hamden. With the tie, West Haven moved to 4-8-1.
Hamden jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the contest, but West Haven capitalized on the power play when Trey Wanerka scored in front off assists from Bush and Mazuroski. The Westies then took a 2-1 lead when Kyle Guarino scored an unassisted goal off a Hamden turnover.
Mazuroski gave West Haven a 3-2 lead with an unassisted tally in the third period, but Hamden rallied to force overtime and the tie.
Lupa finished with 39 saves in the tie.
The West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy girls hockey team is back in the win column. Behind the play of goaltender Megan Losito with 37 saves, the Westie Sharks blanked Guilford 3-0.
Losito was outstanding with 10 saves in the first period and 20 more in the second to keep Guilford off the scoreboard.
While Losito was providing the support in goal, the Westie Sharks provided the offensive support. Olivia Twarowski led the way with two goals and an assist in the win.
Twarowski gave the Westie Sharks a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal in the second period, before she helped provide insurance by setting up Hailey Azzarone’s goal along with Alina Lipinsky late in the third.
Another unassisted goal by Twarowski a short time later sealed the win for the Westie Sharks.
With the victory, West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy snapped a four-game losing skid and improved to 2-8-1 on the year.
Looking to build a winning streak, the Westie Sharks could not do so and fell 4-2 at Greenwich. Rylee DeSanto made 47 saves in the loss, including 21 in the third period.
Twarowski scored both West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy goals, giving the Westie Sharks a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal 4:20 into the second period. Greenwich evened the game nine seconds later, but Twarowski gave West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy a 2-1 lead with 9:19 to go in the middle period.
Greenwich evened the game just over two minutes later and pulled away with a pair of third period goals. West Haven fell to 2-9-1 with the loss.
Returning home to face Suffield, the Westie Sharks looked to get back on the winning track. Trailing 1-0 entering the third period, the Westie Sharks got as close as 3-1 on Azzarone’s unassisted tally in front, but they never got closer in a 4-1 loss.
DeSanto made 43 saves in the loss as West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy fell to 2-10-1 on the year.
The West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy girls hockey team dropped its third straight contest and fell to 2-11-1 with a 3-1 loss at Hamden. DeSanto made 28 saves in the loss, including 21 combined in the final two periods.
The Westie Sharks never led in the game, trailing 2-0 after one period. West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy cut the deficit in half when Azzarone scored with 2:26 left in the second period, but the Westie Sharks could not get closer.
Hamden added a late goal to seal the victory over West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy.
The Westie Sharks moved to 2-11-2 with a 2-2 tie against Trumbull at the Edward L. Bennett Rink. Losito made 27 saves in the tie for West Haven / Sacred Heart Academy.
Lipinsky gave the Westie Sharks a 1-0 lead at the 11:11 mark of the opening period with an unassisted goal. Trumbull scored the next two goals, before Azzarone scored an unassisted goal with 4:38 remaining to force overtime.
