Looking to get back on the winning track, the West Haven baseball team had the right recipe. The Westies had jumped out to an early lead with their ace on the mound.
Despite a solid pitching performance from Chase Supan, Law scored twice in each of the fifth and sixth innings to top West Haven, 5-2, at Jonathan Law.
The Westies tried to rally in the seventh, loading the bases with one out as Madera reached on an error to start the inning, Jones hit a one-out single, and Supan singled to load the bases. West Haven could not get the clutch hit as a fly out and a ground out ended the contest.
Jones and Supan led West Haven with two hits apiece in the loss.
West Haven got back on the winning track with a 10-2 victory over Hillhouse/Career Friday afternoon at Bowen Field in New Haven.
Hume picked up the victory, allowing four hits and two earned runs, while walking one and striking out eight in six innings of work.
Offensively, West Haven had 12 hits and took advantage of five Hillhouse errors. Jose Padilla led the way with three hits, two runs scored, and a run batted in, Jones and Hume each had a pair of hits, Price, Supan, Gilbert and Madera each added a hit and scored a run, with Price driving in a pair and Supan, Gilbert, and Madera knocking in one apiece.
West Haven won its second game in a row and improved to 4-5 with a 6-1 victory over Jonathan Law at Piurek Field.
Hudson Axelrod picked up the win for West Haven as he tossed a complete game, allowing three hits and one earned run, while walking three and striking out four. Axelrod also had a solid day at the plate with two hits and two runs batted in.
Cruz had one hit for the Westies and drove in a pair, while Madera had one hit, walked twice, and scored two runs.
The winning streak for West Haven reached three games. Behind solid pitching from Supan, and timely hitting, West Haven defeated Foran, 8-0, at Foran High.
Jones, Cruz, Padilla, and Gilbert each had two hits in the game. Cruz and Padilla each drove in a pair.
The winning streak reached four games. Behind two hits, two runs batted in, and three runs scored by Padilla, West Haven pounded 10 hits on its way to a 12-2 victory over Hamden in a game stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule at Piurek Field in West Haven Wednesday afternoon.
Jones and Supan also had a pair of hits, with Supan driving in four runs and Cruz scoring three times.
Hume picked up the save in relief for winning pitcher Haygen Axelrod. Hume allowed two hits and no runs in two innings of work.
The winning streak came to an end. After rallying to tie the game with three runs in the top of the seventh, West Haven watched as Guilford scored in the bottom of the inning for a 7-6 victory at Guilford High School.
Trailing 6-3, the Westies (6-6) rallied for three runs in the seventh. Cruz, Padilla, and Supan started the rally with one-out singles, before Gilbert singled to left to score Cruz to get within 6-4.
Scanlon then grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Padilla, before Madera reached on an error with two outs to score Supan with the tying run.
The Grizzlies wasted no time in the bottom of the inning as a West Haven error, a single and an intentional walk loaded the bases, before Guilford got the game-winning hit.
The rally came after West Haven trailed 5-0 after three innings and chipped away to get within striking distance.
The West Haven softball team lost its fourth straight contest with a 4-1 home defeat against Cheshire. With the loss, West Haven fell to 2-6 on the season.
Mia Rubirosa pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs, while striking out five and walking four. The Westies had just one hit in the game off the bat of Holly Waibel.
West Haven suffered its fifth straight defeat and fell to 2-7 on the year with an 11-2 loss at Jonathan Law.
West Haven was held to just six hits in the game, with two coming off the bat of Rubirosa. Taylor Alfano, McDonnell, Gallo, and Wynus each had one hit in the contest.
West Haven snapped its five-game losing streak with a 12-7 victory over East Haven. The road victory allowed the Westies to improve to 3-7 on the year.
Alfano and Gallo led the West Haven offense with three hits apiece, Rubirosa, Waibel, and McDonnell each had two hits, while Waibel and Wynus each drove in three runs. Rubirosa, Alfano, McDonnell, and Aniah Glover each scored twice in the win.
West Haven fell to 3-8 with an 11-5 loss at North Haven. Despite four hits from Wynus and 14 total hits, the Westies could not match the offense of North Haven.
The Westies got back on the winning track with a 20-11 victory at Shelton. With the victory, West Haven moved to 4-8 on the year.
Alfano picked up the win in the pitching circle, and she was a force at the plate with four hits, four runs batted in, and four runs scored. Wynus had three hits, six runs batted in, and two runs scored, while McDonnell had three hits and scored twice.
Waibel had two hits, drove in a pair, and scored three runs, while Rubirosa scored three runs, and Glover, Davey, and Hoey each scored twice.
West Haven improved to 5-8 with a 17-0 victory at Hillhouse. The Westies scored 10 runs in the first inning and never looked back in the victory.
Rubirosa led the offense with two hits, four runs batted in, and three runs scored. Glover had two hits, scored three times, and drove in a run, and Arianna Herazo drove in two runs and scored three times.
The West Haven boys lacrosse team fell to 1-4 with a 6-2 loss at Hamden. Marcus Burrows scored both West Haven goals and T.J. Levenduski made 17 saves in defeat.
With the game scoreless at the half, Burrows scored off an assist from Jason Alling with 5:31 remaining in the third quarter. Burrows scored the final West Haven goal with 3:33 left in the fourth quarter.
Hamden held a 31-18 shot advantage in the game.
They fell to 1-5 with an 18-4 loss at North Haven. Burrows and A.J. Iannotti each had a pair of goals in the loss for the Westies.
North Haven held a 48-10 shot advantage in the game with Ben Pizzano scoring eight goals and adding four assists.
West Haven improved to 2-5 with a 13-8 victory over Montville at Ken Strong Stadium.
Burrows led the way for the Westies with seven goals and one assist, Porto had two goals and one assist, Yousaf Ullah added a goal and two assists, while Brandon Doody, Jason Alling and Iannotti also scored. Levenduski made 19 saves in the win, while Cole Hill had eight faceoff wins.
West Haven fell to 2-6 with a tough 7-6 loss against Branford at home.
The Westies had a 32-30 shot advantage in the game, but Branford scored a late goal to take home the win.
The West Haven boys tennis team won its fifth match in a row with a 5-2 decision over Foran at West Haven High Monday afternoon. With the victory, West Haven improved to 5-1 on the year.
In singles action, top-seeded Miguel Torres defeated Ryan Purviance, 6-3, 6-0, second-seeded Brandon Sihaphong won over Arush Puri 6-0, 3-6, 6-1, while Foran won the final two singles spots. Third-seeded Tristan Adorno defeated West Haven’s Eshwar Balakumar, 6-3, 2-6, 4-6, and fourth-seeded Oscar Lin topped West Haven’s Johnny Chen, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2.
In doubles action, West Haven’s top seed of Ali Hamza and David Guadarrama defeated Patrick Butler and Karthikeya Lakaji, 6-0, 6-3, second-seeded Woobin Kim and Caden Mateo defeated Liam Banick and Deven Dai, 6-1, 6-3, and third-seeded Daniel Davis and Jordan Smith topped Elijah Arinas and Billy Tumendemberel, 6-0, 6-2.
The winning streak has reached six matches for West Haven. The Westies extended the streak with 7-0 victory over Career in New Haven and improved to 6-1 on the year.
In singles play, top-seeded Torres posted a victory, while second-seeded Sihaphong also did the same. Third-seeded Balakumar defeated Christian Santiago, 6-0, 6-0 and fourth-seeded Chen topped Abraham Perez, 6-0, 6-0.
In doubles action, top-seeded Javon Huang and Caden Mateo, second-seeded Guadarrama and Hamza, and third-seeded Davis and Smith all posted victories.
West Haven saw its six-match winning streak come to an end with a 5-2 loss against cross-town rival Notre Dame at West Haven. With the loss, West Haven fell to 6-2 on the year.
In singles action, Notre Dame’s top seed Mike Lorazetti defeated Torre,s 6-0, 6-0, second-seeded Sihaphong of West Haven topped Reed Nanmonn, 6-2, 6-1, Notre Dame’s third seed Reamon Cueis defeated Balakumar, 6-4, 2-6, 10-6, and West Haven’s fourth seed Chen topped Stephen Torres ,6-0, 6-0.
The Green Knights won all doubles matches.
West Haven got back on the winning track with a 5-2 defeat of Wilbur Cross at home. With the victory, the Westies improved to 7-2 on the season.
In singles action, top-seeded Torres defeated JJ O’garro, 6-3, 6-1, Second-seeded Sihaphong topped Adam Sharqaw,r 6-0, 6-0, third-seeded Julian Theodore from Wilbur Cross topped West Haven’s Balakumar, 6-3, 6-1, and West Haven’s fourth seed Chen defeated Adrian Sampedro 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles play, top-seeded Alki Hussain and Kurt Boone of Cross topped West Haven’s Huang and Mateo, 6-4, 6-2. Second-seeded Guadarrama and Hamza defeated Meet Patel and Vikrom Dalal, 6-3, 6-1, and third-seeded Davis and Smith topped Ahilya Singh and Jenna Singh, 6-2, 5-7, 12-10.
West Haven fell to 7-3 with a 7-0 loss at Xavier Wednesday afternoon.
West Haven got back on the winning side with a 4-3 victory over Shelton Thursday afternoon at West Haven High. With the victory, West Haven improved to 8-3 on the year.
In singles action, top-seeded Torres defeated Chase Graber, 6-3, 6-3, second-seeded Sihaphong topped Jack Parkes, 6-1, 7-6, and third-seeded Balakumar defeated Adam Klein, 6-3, 6-4. Shelton’s fourth seed Nikil Dagar defeated West Haven’s Chen, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
In doubles play, Shelton’s top seed of J.P. Kocot and Soham Agrwal defeated West Haven’s Huang and Mateo, 7-5, 6-4. West Haven won the second seed as Guadarrama and Hamza topped Kevin Foley and Krishiv Patel, 6-0, 6-1, while Shelton’s third seed of Johnathan Ryder and Prime Minister Shah defeated Davis and Smith, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
