The West Haven baseball team improved to 2-2 with a come-from-behind 10-6 victory over East Haven. Colin Murray, Cam Lipford, Rob Jackson, and Hudson Axelrod each had a pair of hits in the win, with Murray driving in four runs, and Axelrod scoring twice. Justin Wilson also drove in a pair of runs, and Xavier Molina scored twice.
West Haven trailed 6-1 heading to the bottom of the second inning, but rallied for two runs in the second, one in the third, and six in the fifth to pull out the victory.
Axelrod was hit by a pitch with one out in the second, Nathan Payne walked, and Murray hit a two-out double to score Axelrod. Wilson walked with the bases loaded to get West Haven within 6-3.
West Haven inched closer with another run in the fourth inning as Matt Pasacreta walked, Jackson singled to put runners on the corners, and Axelrod’s infield single scored Pasacreta.
The Westies took the lead for good with six runs in the fifth inning. Jackson and Axelrod opened with singles, and Molina hit a one-out single to load the bases. Murray cleared the bases with a triple to center, and he scored on a single by Jose Padilla for an 8-6 West Haven lead.
Wilson followed with a single to right to score Padilla, and Lipford doubled to left to score Wilson for a 10-6 lead.
West Haven fell to 2-3 with a 14-4 loss to cross-town rival Notre Dame in a game stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule. Wilson led the offense with two hits and four runs batted in, while Padilla added two hits and scored twice.
The Westies took a 3-0 lead in the first inning, but the Green Knights scored once in the bottom of the inning, and four times in the second to take a 5-1 lead they never relinquished.
Axelrod led off the game with a walk, Padilla singled to left, and Murray followed with a single to load the bases. Wilson then doubled to left to clear the bases for a 3-0 lead.


Trailing 11-3, West Haven scored its final run in the top of the sixth as Padillaled off with a double and scored on a one-out single by Wilson.
West Haven fell to 2-4 with a 14-1 home loss to Fairfield Prep. The Jesuits scored twice in each of the second and third innings and three more times in the fifth for a 7-0 lead, before blowing the game open with seven runs in the seventh inning.
West Haven had one hit in the game and scored its lone run in the fifth inning as Molina singled to center and scored later in the inning on an error.
The Westies had a golden opportunity to get back in the win column, but a late rally fell short with the game-tying run thrown at out the plate to end a 4-3 loss against Foran.
Trailing 4-2 in the seventh, Axelrod led off with a walk, moved to third on a single by Padilla, and scored on Murray’s sacrifice fly to left. With Padilla on second, Lipford hit a two-out single to right, but Padilla was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
Trailing 1-0 in the first, West Haven evened the game when Padilla hit a one-out double and scored on a single by Wilson. Lipford’s single in the sixth scored Murray to help West Haven get within 4-2.
Padilla led the offense with three hits and a run scored, while Lipford had two hits and drove in a run.
The West Haven softball team fell to 2-1 with a 6-3 home loss against North Haven. Gillian Wynus went the distance, allowing six earned runs, while striking out seven and walking seven. Abby Wynus led West Haven with two hits, one run batted in, and one run scored.
Trailing 4-0 in the third, West Haven cut the deficit in half as Natalia Szostek led off with a triple, and Szostek scored on a single by Abby Wynus. Abby Wynus scored when Maddy Kaczmarek bunted and reached on an error to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Nighthawks got that run back in the fourth and led 5-2 until London Ryan led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to left to get the Westies within 5-3.
West Haven fell to 2-2 with a 6-3 loss at East Haven. The Yellowjackets scored five times in the second inning for a 5-0 lead and never looked back.
The Westies scored twice in the third inning and once more in the fourth to get within 5-3, but West Haven could not get closer. Kaczmarek and Gillian Wynus each had a pair of hits, while Gillian Wynus gave up five earned runs on eight hits, striking out eight and walking six.
Trailing by five runs, West Haven rallied in the third when Kaczmarek led off with a single to right, Ryan hit a one-out double to center, and Isabel Abrego singled to center to score a pair.
West Haven got within a pair of runs in the fourth as Abby Wynus hit a two-out single to left and later scored when Kaczmarek reached on an error.
The Westies fell to 2-3 with a 5-0 loss at Stamford. West Haven had only three hits in the game, one apiece from Abby Wynus, Kaczmarek, and Ryan, while Gillian Wynus went the distance, allowing three hits and three earned runs.
Abby Wynus and Ryan led the Westies to an 11-5 victory at Sacred Heart Academy as Wynus had three hits and scored four runs, while Ryan added two hits, scored once, and drove in four on a second inning grand slam which helped West Haven to a 6-0 lead. Szostek and Hailey each had a pair of hits, with Wynter Hailey scoring twice.
The Westies scored two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings to take a 10-1 lead. In the fourth, Gillian Wynus scored on a wild pitch, and Szostek singled to score another run. Abby Wynus doubled to score Hailey in the fifth, before scoring on a wild pitch.
The Westies took a 6-0 lead in the second inning with five runs. Kaczmarek walked to force in the first run of the second inning, before Ryan blasted a grand slam to left for a 6-0 lead.
West Haven won its second game in a row and improved to 4-3 with an 18-5 victory at Hillhouse in a game stopped after five innings due to the mercy rule.
Juliana Crudo led the offense with four hits, two runs batted in, and two runs scored. Abby Wynus added three hits, three runs scored, and two runs batted in, while Ryan had three hits, scored once, and drove in a run. Gillian Wynus had two hits, drove in three runs, and scored twice, while Kaczmarek had two hits and scored once.
The boys lacrosse team fell to 0-2 with a 21-4 loss against Sheehan. Senior Anthony Iannotti scored all four goals for the Westies in the loss.
West Haven trailed 4-0 after one quarter and 13-3 at the half as Iannotti scored three times in the second quarter. Sheehan scored five more times in the third quarter, before Iannotti scored West Haven’s final goal in the fourth quarter.
The Westies picked up their first victory of the season with an 8-7 decision over Montville at Ken Strong Stadium.
Iannotti scored four goals, Leo Mazuroski scored three, and Anthony DiMeglio added one tally in the victory. Cole Hill had three assists and James Olsen added one for West Haven. Raziah Yazzie made 16 saves in the victory.
Iannotti scored both West Haven goals as they railed 3-2 after one quarter, before Mazuroski’s tally in the second quarter sent the game to the half even at three.
Each team scored three times in the third quarter as the game was even at six. Mazuroski scored the first two goals in the third and Iannotti added the third goal of the quarter. DiMeglio scored to start the fourth quarter and Iannotti had the final West Haven tally.
The West Haven girls lacrosse team fell to Lyman Hall, 17-2, at Ken Strong Stadium. Madden Evangeliste and Elena Cortes each scored once as the Westies fell to 0-3 on the year.
After an 18-0 loss at Sheehan, the girls lacrosse team fell 14-1 at Mercy as Evangeliste scored the lone West Haven goal. With the loss, West Haven dropped to 0-5 on the year.
The boys tennis team fell to 0-4 with a 7-0 loss at Lyman Hall. In singles action, top-seeded Jordan Macri defeated West Haven’s Daniel Davis 6-3, 6-2, second-seeded Dave Arsenault topped Dhruva Garani 7-6 (7-1), 6-1, third-seeded Zach Rininger won over Adnan Dost 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), and fourth-seeded Brayden Hamilton topped Mirwais Ibtikar 6-1, 6-2.
In doubles play, Lyman Hall’s top seed of Giulio Marino and Jason Bonarrigo defeated West Haven’s Adam Chouiki and Lucio Lara-Gaytan 6-1, 6-1, second-seeded Christian Scialla and Niko Costa topped Edward Fagnani and Ben Proano 6-3, 1-6, 6-3, and third-seeded Nathan Leosche and Jake Eves won over Isaac Morales and Yahya Khan 6-1, 6-4.
The Westies improved to 2-5 with a 6-1 victory over Platt Tech. In singles play, top-seeded Garani defeated Paul Corsini 8-5, second-seeded Davis topped Ramon Rodriguez 8-0, third-seeded Dost won over Victor Zaleski 8-0, and fourth-seeded Ibtikar defeated Geremiah Randall 8-4.
In doubles play, Platt Tech’s top seed of Ramon Rodriquez and Paul Corsini defeated Chouiki and Proano 8-5. West Haven’s second-seeded Jayden Tarducci and Fernando Ayala defeated Victor Zaleski and Geremiah Randle 8-0, while Platt Tech’s third seed forfeited.
The girls tennis team fell to 1-2 with a 7-0 loss against Jonathan Law. In singles play, Law’s top seed Harshitha Kothapalli defeated Lisa Hennessey 6-2, 6-4, second seed Courtney Russo topped Jocelyn Otero 6-3, 6-2, third seed Rose O’Connell defeated Angelina Torres 6-0, 6-0, and fourth-seeded Cora Aitkenhead topped Isabella Arevalo 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles play, Law’s top seed of Isla McKeand and Emma Ciccarelli defeated Hailey Dargon and Diana Morales 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, second-seeded Siya Patil and Vanessa Messina defeated West Haven’s Martha Augustin and Mila Cruz 6-3, 6-2, and third-seeded Kayla Markowitz and Aasritha Gadhamsetty topped West Haven’s Karen Solano-Hincapie and Caitlin Pinedo 6-0, 6-2.
After falling to Sacred Heart Academy 7-0, the Westies were defeated 6-1 by Mercy to drop to 1-4 on the year.
In singles play, Mercy’s top seed of Amelia Mullane defeated Torres 6-0, 6-2, second-seeded Maybeline Hladky topped West Haven’s Otero 6-0, 6-0, while West Haven’s Hennessey won in the third slot over Emma Ferency 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and Mercy’s Addison Formica topped Arevalo 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.
In doubles play. Mercy’s top-seeded Charlotte Parker and Irene Milite defeated Dargon and Morales 6-1, 6-0. Second-seeded Julia Wlaz and Stella Parker topped West Haven’s Agustin and Cruz 6-3, 6-2, while third-seeded Amelia Wlaz and Savannah Calkins topped West Haven’s Solano-Hincapie and Pinedo 6-1, 6-1.
The Westies fell to 1-5 with a 4-3 home loss against Sheehan. In singles play, Sheehan’s McKenna Liu defeated Hennessey 6-1, 6-2, Chelsea Ballough topped West Haven’s Otero 6-2, 6-1, Meredith Benkun topped West Haven’s Arevalo, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, and Lily Tomasello topped West Haven’s Angelina Torres 6-2, 7-5.
In doubles play, West Haven’s Dargon and Morales defeated Olivia Jee 6-4, 7-5, Augustin and Cruz topped Kiana Grier and Danika Le 6-2, 6-0, and Pinedo and Solano-Hincapie defeated Caitlyn Crouch and Alisha Patel 6-2, 6-7, 6-0.
