After the West Haven football team opened the season with a loss against Greenwich, the team was well aware of what the new mission. That mission, to win its game each week, has worked to perfection for five straight weeks.
West Haven’s latest victory came in a 39-0 home victory over Guilford. With the win, West Haven improved to 5-1 on the year.
Nick Conlan threw for 235 yards and one touchdown, while rushing for 116 yards and another touchdown. Coryon Harris ran for 128 yards and three touchdowns, while also coming up with three interceptions on the defensive side.
The Westies took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter as Conlan connected with Tahmayn Thompson for an 80-yard score. Harris then took over as his 19-yard touchdown run gave the Westies a 13-0 lead, before he scored from six yards out for a 19-0 lead with 8:48 left in the third quarter.
When Harris scored from three yards out with 3:45 left in the third, West Haven led 26-0. Conlan scored from 12 yards out 30 seconds into the fourth, and Darryl Small scored from three yards out with 3:08 remaining.
The West Haven volleyball team fell to North Haven 3-0 at West Haven High by scores of 25-13, 25-19, and 25-16. The second straight loss for the Westies dropped the team to 3-16 on the year.
Sarah Davey ran the offense with 17 assists and added seven digs on the defensive side. Camila Queiroz also had seven digs, while adding five kills, Avery Criscio added five digs, Sam Close had six kills, Odalys Solorzano had five digs, and Chloe Payne finished with four kills.
West Haven closed the regular season with a 3-1 home loss against North Branford. The third straight defeat by scores of 25-12, 25-13, 22-25, and 26-24 closed West Haven’s season at 3-17.
Davey closed her high school volleyball career in style with 21 assists and 17 digs. Criscio also had 17 digs and added four kills, while Queiroz had seven digs, Jayden Braacker had 10 digs, Solorzano had six digs, Mia Roman had five digs, and Kearlze Marquis had five kills.
Payne added six kills, three blocks ad three digs, while Close had five kills, three digs and three aces.
The West Haven boys soccer team opened the week in impressive fashion. Trailing early, the Westies stormed back to top Branford 5-3 at Ken Strong Stadium in West Haven.
With its third straight victory, West Haven improved to 8-6 on the year.
“After a horrible start , the lads took control of the game and scored five unanswered goals,” West Haven coach Chris Cap said. “Congrats to the freshman Aidan (Panton) on his first varsity goal to put us ahead.”
With the Hornets leading 3-0 just 11 minutes in, West Haven began its rally as Walter Romero scored off an assist from Bryan Monge at the 33:30 mark to get within 3-1 at the half.
The Westies trailed by those two goals before Monge scored off an assist from Matthew Panton. Romero then scored his second of the game, off an assist from Ethan Masoperh at the 61:30 mark to even the game at three.
Just 3:50 later, West Haven took the lead for good when Aidan Panton scored off an assist from Bobby Severino with 14:40 remaining. Matthew Panton capped the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 73:35 mark.
West Haven held a 23-8 shot advantage in the contest. Yahzeel Beyley made five saves in the win.
The feel good vibes West Haven had after a stirring comeback victory over Branford lasted just a few days. Traveling to Bethel, the Westies were thumped 7-1 and fell to 8-7 on the year.
West Haven’s only goal was scored by Youssouf Keira off an assist from Romero. Beyley made 13 saves in the loss.
Bethel was led by Brady Fitzgerald and Nick Freire with two goals apiece.
In the final game of the regular season, West Haven improved to 9-7 with a 6-0 home victory over Notre Dame Prep.
West Haven controlled the game with an 18-8 shot advantage and Beyley made sure Notre Dame Prep was kept off the scoreboard with five saves in the shutout.
“It was nice to finish off the regular season with a strong win,” Cap said. “Congrats to Daniel (Cabrera) on his first varsity goal.”
Romero led the way for West Haven with two goals and an assist, while Severino finished with a goal and an assist.
Romero got things going when he scored off an assist from Panton at the 12:22 mark of the first half. Daniel Cabrera extended the lead with his first varsity goal for a 2-0 advantage off an assist from Romero at the 26-minute mark.
Leading 2-0 at the half, the Westies put the game away with four goals in the second half. Severino scored an unassisted goal for a 3-0 lead at 46:30, Wilson Canan tallied off an assist from Severino at 52:00, Romero added an unassisted goal 15 minutes later, and Caleb Awuah scored off and assist from Keira with four minutes to go.
