The girls soccer team hosted the Foran Lions on Senior Night at Ken Strong Stadium on Tuesday night. After saluting their seven seniors, the Blue Devils got an early jump on the Lions when Keegan Riccio led Kelsey Gilmore with a perfect pass and then Gilmore’s kick sailed around a charging Foran goalkeeper and wind from the approaching storm guided the ball into the open net for a 1-0 lead just 6:21 into the contest.
As the rain continued to pelt the surface, the game was halted due to lightning and resumed over an hour later. That was all the offense Mackenzie Gardner and the Westies needed. Gardner was called on to make only two saves while posting her fifth shutout of the season.
The girls will now have a little time off while preparing for the CIAC playoffs. Tournament pairings will be announced on Friday.
The volleyball team traveled to New Haven on Monday evening and swept the Career Panthers, 25-19, 25-18, 25-17 to secure a position in the CIAC tournament. Nancy Tapia had 10 digs and nine kills, Irene Ronan had eight aces and eight kills, Noelle Noble had seven digs and four kills and Giliana Santaniello had seven assists and three aces to lead the Blue Devils.
With a playoff position already in hand, the Westies went to Milford on Tuesday to try to improve their position for the playoffs. The girls did just that with a 25-13, 25-8, 25-13 sweep of the Platt Tech Panthers.
Giliana Santaniello had 13 assists and three aces, Veronica Lynn had 10 aces, Jennifer Ortiz had 11 assists, and Nancy Tapia had 11 kills to lead West Haven.
