The West Haven/Sacred Heart girls hockey team were looking to start another winning streak after having its eight-game streak snapped last week when the Westie Sharks traveled to Cromwell on Friday night to battle Northwest Catholic/Mercy. The girls jumped out to an early lead when Mia Celentano scored just 4:05 into the game and extended the lead with a Taylor Nowak goal, assisted by Brooke McNabola with 2:32 left in the first period.
Northwest Catholic/Mercy cut the lead to 2-1 in the second period but, McNabola iced the game with a goal, assisted by Megan Froehlich with 8:32 left in the game for a 3-1 final. Tatum Courtmanche made 27 saves in goal for the Westie Sharks to preserve the victory.
On Sunday evening, the girls hosted the Amity/North Haven/ Cheshire Blades in a rematch of last week’s 2-1 OT win by the Westie Sharks. This one had the makings of a classic when the teams played end to end hockey in the first, two periods highlighted by tremendous goaltending at each end. The Blades were able to take a 1-0 lead with 12.6 seconds left in the second period.
The Sharks were able to get the equalizer 3:05 into the third period when Veronica Lynn’s rocket from the point on a five on three power play found the top corner of the net. Taylor Nowak picked up an assist on the goal. The girls continued to buzz the Blades goal but several chances were just kept clear of the goal line. The Blades took a 2-0 lead with a shot through a screen with 4:53 left in the game and were able to ice the game with insurance goals with 2:48 and 1:42 left in the game for a 4-1 final. Tatum Courtmanche stood on her head, making several spectacular saves in a 31 save performance between the pipes.
This week, the girls played at Simsbury on Wednesday and finish the week hosting Hall/Conard on Saturday at 3.
The boys hockey team visited the Fairfield Prep Jesuits on Wednesday evening at the Wonderland of Ice and did its best to stay with the powerful Jesuits. The Westies fell behind 3-0 in the first period when Prep scored two goals in the first four minutes of the game and then added a goal with 42 seconds left in the period. The Jesuits would add a fourth goal two minutes into the second period to extend the lead to 4-0. Fairfield Prep sealed the victory with four, more goals in the third period. The Jesuits stymied the West Haven offense. The Blue Devils best scoring opportunity came on a Niko Kyle breakaway that was denied by the Jesuit goaltender. Logan Cole did his best, stopping 31 Prep shots while Noah Iverson, who came in during the third period made six saves between the pipes.
The Westies renewed their rivalry with the Hamden Green Dragons on Wednesday night and will host the Notre Dame of Fairfield Lancers on Saturday at 1.
The boys basketball visited the Career Panthers on Friday night in New Haven and took the game to overtime before dropping a 63-56 decision. The Blue Devils held a 44-39 lead after three quarters but let the Panthers tie things up and force overtime, where Career dominated to pull out the victory. Josiah Steinman led the Westies with 22 points while Jordan Berrios had nine points in the loss.
This week, the Westies hosted the Hamden Green Dragons on Monday, traveled to Milford to face the Jonathan Law Eagles on Wednesday and will finish the week with a trip to Middletown to face the Xavier Falcons on Friday at 7.
The girls basketball team dropped its fifth, straight game on Tuesday night against the Sheehan Titans, 57-41. Amanda Carr did everything she could to help the Westies scoring 15 points, while gathering in eight rebounds and blocking seven shots. Ebonie Jones added 10 points while Keegan Riccio and Ny’Aire Serrano had four points each in the loss.
The Blue Devils finished the week hosting the Cheshire Rams on Friday evening in the WHHS Gym. After digging an early hole in the first quarter, the Westies rallied to cut the Rams lead to 22-18 at the half and got with two points in the third quarter but it was not enough in a 47-42 loss to Cheshire. Amanda Carr led the girls with 14 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks, while Diamond Dixon added 10 points.
This week, the girls visited the Cross Governors on Monday, Hosted the Career Panthers on Wednesday, and the host the North Haven Indians on Friday at 7.
The West Haven/Platt Tech boys swimming team defeated Branford/Guilford, 95-76, at the WHHS Pool on Tuesday afternoon behind two wins each by Issac Gorske and Luis Lopez in individual events and both were members of the victorious 200 medley relay team. Gorske took the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke while Lopez won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Both swimmers were also part of the 200 medley relay along with Shane Taulty and Heli Estrada that swam to victory with a time of 1:59.43. Estrada was also a member of the victorious 200 freestyle relay team with Bryan Barrington, Chris Olsen and Chris D’Inzio.
This week the boys hosted the Hamden Green Dragons on Tuesday.
