

The West Haven football team has appeared in two consecutive Class LL state finals. With a new identity, the Westies want the state to know they are still around.
West Haven started the 2025 season in fine fashion with a 30-6 victory at Manchester in a Connecticut High School Alliance game at Memorial Field in Manchester.
Sophomore quarterback Mason Wright led the way for the Westies as he threw for 208 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and he ran for another score in the victory.
In a solid team effort, West Haven jumped out to a 14-0 lead, then responded quickly once Manchester got on the board. The Westies built a 14-point lead at the half, 20-6, and finished the scoring with 10 points in the third quarter.



The Westies needed less than two minutes to take a 7-0 lead as Wright connected with junior Cordell Barrow for a 55-yard touchdown connection. After West Haven held Manchester, the Westies marched 84 yards, ending with a one-yard score by Wright for a 14-0 lead after junior Justin Chacon connected on his second extra point of the night.
Manchester started to build some momentum with a touchdown and a defensive stop, but senior Trew Kitson got everything back to normal when his interception was returned 30 yards for a touchdown and a 20-6 West Haven advantage.
West Haven put the game out of reach in the third quarter as Wright connected with junior T.J. Stevenson for a 22-yard scoring strike, and Chacon connected on a 25-yard field goal for a 30-6 lead.



Senior Amir Daniley ran 21 times for 101 yards in the win.
The West Haven volleyball team was looking to get off to a quick start to the season. A season-opening win over Jonathan Law set the tone, and a 3-0 victory over Wilbur Cross helped West Haven to a 2-0 start.
Against Cross, the Westies used a complete team effort to post a 25-22, 25-13, 25-14 victory. Jen Ngo led the offense with 25 assists and three kills, while Gabby Hines and Marley Wilson each added eight kills.
Mia Roman led the defensive effort with 11 digs, Gulianna Ruggiero had 10 digs, Keira Weissbach had seven digs, and Ngo added five digs. Ruggiero also added seven assists, and Chloe Payne and Sam Close each had four kills.
In the closest game of the match, Roman used a pair of aces to give West Haven a 13-10 lead in the first game. Cross evened the game at 22, but a kill by Hines, and two service points by Payne closed the opening game for West Haven.
Roman played a big part in the second game victory as she went to the service line with West Haven leading 12-11 and left with a 23-12 advantage. Roman’s 11 service points were aided by a pair of kills by Wilson in the run.
West Haven controlled the third game and took a 16-8 lead on an ace by Dominique Fidalgo, who also closed the game and the match with a kill.
Following a loss to St. Joseph, West Haven improved to 3-1 with a 25-19, 29-27, 25-15 road victory over North Haven.
Ngo ran the offense with 24 assists, Payne and Close each had 10 kills, and Wilson added five kills. Roman led the defensive effort with seven digs, while Ngo, Fidalgo and Payne each had four digs. Close and Payne also added a pair of blocks each.
West Haven won its second straight contest and improved to 4-1 with a 25-6, 25-7, 25-23 home victory over Bunnell.
The Westies received a balanced attack and were led by Ngo with 20 assists, three digs, and two kills. Payne added eight kills and six aces, Close had six kills, two aces, two digs, and two blocks, Masha Shek added six digs, and Amani Dumbuya had four digs. Fidalgo finished with four kills and three aces, while Roman and Elena Curtis each had four digs.
After falling to Lauralton Hall to start the season, the West Haven girls soccer team was looking to even its early season record. Despite a valiant effort, the young West Haven team fell to Shelton, 3-1.
The Westies had limited scoring opportunities in the first half, and trailed 1-0 as the Gaels scored with 50 seconds remaining in the opening half. Trailing 2-0, West Haven had better scoring opportunities in the second half.
Two golden opportunities went by the boards as sophomore Naomi Shubin sailed a shot over the goal from 20 yards out five minutes into the second half, and freshman Stella Porto was denied in front one minute later.
Shelton increased the lead to 3-0 with 15 minutes remaining, before West Haven used a goal by Amiyah Jones with 6:34 to go to get within a pair. Porto had West Haven’s last quality scoring chance, but was denied on a break with three minutes remaining.
The West Haven boys soccer team improved to 3-0 with a 10-1 home victory over Sheehan. Eight different players scored for the Westies, with Pedro Furtado and Bryan Brown leading the way with a pair of goals apiece.
West Haven scored the first four goals of the game and took a 5-1 lead to the half. Dylan Petrie got the Westies going 3:01 into the game, Bryan Monge scored 3:26 later, Furtado increased the lead to 3-0 at the 17:39 mark off an assist from Monge, and Akeem Traore scored 20 seconds later off an assist from Youssouf Keira. Michael Villagomez increased the lead to 5-1 off a helper from David Llivicura.
West Haven put the game away with three goals in the first eight minutes of the second half. Keira scored off an assist from Joel Goodlow, Goodlow tallied on a penalty kick, and Furtado scored his second of the game for an 8-1 lead. Brown scored the final two goals of the game, with his first assisted by Amar Sanounou.
